“The wound seems to be closing up well.”

The tall, leggy black doctor looked like a Themysciran hippie, like she should be selling homemade bronze armor at Burning Man. She was built like Darwyn Cooke’s Wonder Woman, tall and broad, with her hip-length hair bound up in braids and corded sandals around surprisingly dainty feet. She probably had to use an upper letter of the alphabet to describe her bra size, too.

I know Gecko noticed, because my poor apprentice was shirtless and half-lost in her upper torso as she looked him over, heedless of the trauma she was no doubt imprinting on his libido.

The alchemical solution she’d applied to his midsection, something that had a fancy Latin title and most Society doctors just called suture resin, had cleaned and sealed his musket wound, then formed a tough but somewhat sticky coating over the wound that reminded me of dried pine sap.

She leaned away from Gecko, freeing him from that hell of squishy pillows, and clicked her pen, jotting down notes on her board. “I think he’s safe to take home. Keep him off his feet for a few days to ensure the wound stays closed and he shouldn’t even have a scar.”

“No worries.” He puffed out his chest a bit and did a good job of not wincing. “After my vacation I’m ready for a week of watching TV and eating cheeseburgers.”

“Mm, you do that,” the doctor said.

“What about Mission, Doctor-?”

I was hoping she’d offer her name, but alas, I probably looked too much like a vagrant to get her number. “She’s refused any treatment that doesn’t get the approval of the Vatican, so there’s only so much I could do. Antibiotic ointments and sterile dressings for the burns, IV fluids and a tetanus shot. I gave her a few painkillers but I’m advising her to see her own doctor since she stonewalled most of my efforts, and I’m telling you to be sure she does it.”

I offered an apologetic smirk. “Sure, Doc. Gecko, you ready to go?”

He rose to his feet, doing his best to avoid staring at the doctor, but when his head only came up to her chest, it wasn’t a battle he was prepared to win. “Uh, yeah, no problem. Um, thanks Doc. For everything.”

“Mmhmm, watch yourself out there, hotshot.” She turned on her heel and walked out with a swaying, cat-like indifference in her hips.

“Try not to look too hard,” I said. “She might be psychic.”

“Shut up, man,” Gecko groaned. “You were lookin’ too.”

I ruffled his short dreads and he swatted at my hand. Teenagers. Being awkward was just part of the experience. “Ready to head home?”

“I’ve been ready for weeks,” he said. “Mission coming with us? Or is she already off to Rome?”

“Her flight is tomorrow.”

“Oh yeah? So I get to listen to you arguing all night, again?”

A weary sigh escaped my teeth. “Nah, kid, I think we’re all too tired for it.”

“I’m wide awake,” he said. “I’m ordering a Burgerbop burger-bomb and I’m listening to Fatalicious until the food coma hits.
