Chapter Five

Drinking another cup of coffee quickly, Colin is preparing to take his leave. It’s 6:00 AM, his apartment still a mess, but he just leaves it the way it is.

“Scout, stop being a lazy bone and get out of bed.” Colin yells from the bathroom. He makes sure he looks presentable. “I know it’s early and I know I almost killed you accidentally yesterday, but I let you sleep in my bed last night as an apology... So, get up.” He says louder, hobbling out of the bathroom tiredly, looking like a drunk. He eyes Scout who is still sleeping as he passes his bedroom.

Pausing dead in his tracks, Colin moves backwards and stops at the open door. “Scout.” He says with a chuckle. “I saw that little eye of yours open you sneak, get out of bed. Now.” There’s no response, but the dog’s tail is wagging a little, half-lidded eyes watching.

Colin smirks. “Right, well if you aren’t going to get up, no morning treat for you.” He finishes walking away.

Suddenly there’s a bursting bundle of energy next to him, bounding around and watching Colin’s hands for the promised reward. “Yeah, I know what you want.” He says, retrieving a treat from a cookie jar on the counter. It’s one thing he’d placed in the corner, far back, so if he ever had an episode, he’d leave it alone.

“Here you go Sneaky.” He says, throwing the treat to Scout who chews on it happily. “Now let’s go then, we have to get to work or Allen will kill us.”

They take their leave.

Getting on the bus once again, and after a quarrel with the driver, Colin takes an empty seat next to a blue-haired woman. She is reading a newspaper, eyes skimming the comic strips before looking curiously over at Scout who lies beneath the seat again. She blinks, looking back over to Colin who ignores her for the most part.

“Cute Doberman Pinscher.” She says, smiling at him when his eyes meet hers, a bland expression on his face. She seems genuine in her comment, nodding down to show who she is talking about. “Does he have a name?” She continues, folding the newspaper in her lap.

Colin stares for a moment at her black eyes before responding. “Of course, he has a name.” He mutters, looking away as if it was obvious.

“What is it?” She asks, eyes back on Scout.

“Why do you want to know?” He responds in a tired tone.

“Well, I was just curious, you don’t have to tell me.” She says, reaching a hand out for Scout to sniff.

“His name is Scout...” The dog looks up curiously and watches as his name is said, eyeing the woman as her hand moves closer.

Pausing for a moment, pondering, Colin says, “Miss, please don’t touch him.” It was snappier than he meant it to be.

She stops and looks back over, drawing her hand back to her light coat, a slight blush crossing her cheeks. She seems embarrassed. “Sorry sir...”

“No worries.” Colin finishes, both of them going back to what they were previously doing.
