Chapter Six

From where he sat in the parked car with Lindsay, Gregor watched Brian leave.

“Commander? What’s the plan?” Lindsay asked, clearly anxious to do more than observe.

Gregor leaned back in his seat. “We wait for Zachary to return. We wait for his report. Then we decide.”

She frowned but didn’t argue. She knew better than to question him. Gregor rubbed his chin, watching Brian drive away. The tracker they’d put on his car would tell him where Brian was going. He suspected they knew someone was hunting them and would probably try to act normal, as if nothing was amiss. It would have been sound strategy if the hunters were anyone but himself and two knights.

Zachary jogged over to the car and got into the backseat.

“Well?” Gregor asked.

“I don’t think the scroll is with them, Commander. I didn’t feel it. Besides, you said yourself the hawk shifter took it.”

“Yes.” Gregor resisted a sigh. “I’d hoped she would reconnect with the wolf, but it appears they were slightly smarter than I gave them credit for.”

Zachary fidgeted in his seat.

“What’s your problem?” Lindsay asked.

Gregor turned in his seat to meet Zachary’s eyes.

Zachary swallowed. “The wolf shifter… he’s called his pack.”

“We have some time before the mongrels—”

“And the Agency.”

Every one of Gregor’s muscles tightened. “What?”

Zachary paled. “The wolf said his father was the pack’s contact with the Agency. The father’s probably talking to the Agency right now. They’ll get here quick, sir.”

“Yes.” Gregor leaned back against his seat and closed his eyes for a moment. The Agency. That was a complication he didn’t need. Arcas wanted the Agency kept in the dark for as long as possible. With the Knights of the Dawn disbanded, Arcas had assumed—and rightly—the Agency would spend most of its time rounding up members who had escaped. The Agency would also waste their time running in circles searching for Arcas.

But if the Agency learned of the scrolls…. Gregor gritted his teeth. He couldn’t let that happen. Not on his watch. He would not fail Arcas.

“You two, watch the wolves. Follow them, stay out of sight and smell range. Wait for my command before you approach them.”

He got out of the car.

“Sir?” Lindsay asked.

Gregor took a moment to lean down and look in the window. “I’m going to pay our traitorous brother a visit.”
