Chapter 10.
We Return to The Case of the Missing Clocks. (And it is somewhat like a hungry clock that goes back four seconds.)
The unicorn said nothing, and simply stamped its hoof, while Miss Leeda, with a look of concern, implored, âThat is terrible! Is there anything at all we can do? I would be willing to help in any way possible.â
I interjected, âWe must be able to do something! Can the special clocks required for the procedure be recreated in any way?â
Van der Lucht shook his head negatively and sighed. âNo, that would be impossible. Their maker took the secret of their design to his grave. The construction of the two clocks was an extremely complex achievement back then. I assure you, there is no one alive today, who could repeat the task.â
âThen it is elementary,â Sherlock stated. âWe must locate the timepieces before the deadline. Now tell me everything you know about the clocks, where they were kept, who may have known about them, how they were secured, and in particular, every detail you can remember about the day they disappeared.â
Mr. Van der Lucht sighed and began, âPieter Van den Keere is remembered as a Dutch engraver, publisher and globe maker, but what is not known is that he also dabbled in horology or clock-making. His most significant contribution, which will never be known to the world, was his construction of the two clocks that were used to facilitate the first unicornâs transformation. It was Petrus Plancius who discovered the process, but it was Van den Keere who created the clockwork mechanism that made it function. He incorporated several crystals in his design of the apparatus. It was based on the knowledge that all creatures have an energy or spirit if you will, that dwells within their physical bodies. The actual process involved the phase transformation abilities of the unicorns, the piezoelectric energy of the crystals, the temporal characteristics of the clocks, knowledge of the celestial sphere, and I am sure, several additional factors that were never fully explained.
âThe inner circle of our group consisted of the Uranographers or celestial cartographers. Uranography combines astronomy and cartography and consists of mapping stars, galaxies, and other astronomical objects on the celestial sphere. The result of their efforts was that the spirits of the creatures were transferred from their Earthly physical bodies into the heavens.
âWhile all of this was done in utmost secrecy, Van den Keereâs wife, Anna Beurt, somehow did find out about the unicorns. It was said that she was altogether enraptured by them and was utterly devastated when they became the constellation. She was never the same afterward. It is not known what became of her, but some records that indicate Van Den Keere remarried in 1623. I do not know if it is of importance, but it was rumored that Annaâs final words to him were, âYou will be sorry. They will never return to you!â I do not know what she may have meant. It was thoroughly
