Chapter 12
One More Very Strange Side Trip
(And this time some talking flowers)
Sherlock spun around quickly to see and verified that the machine was indeed gone. Where its battered remains had previously stood, there was nothing but an indentation in the ground.
Sherlock turned to the group and was about to speak when the White Rabbit held up his paws and loudly exclaimed, “It wasn’t m-m-me. I didn’t do it! Really I didn’t. I was here in front of you the whole time. You can ask my watch.”
Sherlock answered saying, “Don’t worry, Rabbit, no one has said that you did anything this time. I want to ask, if any of you saw anything while the Queen of Hearts was leaving on the folly?”
In a panic, the group began answering in their typical fashion, of all of them speaking at the same time, starting with the Cheshire Cat shaking his head, “No, no, not at all.”
Jabberwocky looking to the right and left repeatedly voiced, “I didn’t see anything. Did you see anything? I really did not see anything!”
“But I wasn’t looking in that direction,” implored the White Rabbit.
In his speaking pose the Hatter declared, “I am not really certain or sure, and you know I am never really quite certain of anything, but I will say it certainly looks like it’s gone.”
“But how could it just disappear?” the Cat wondered while rotating its head. “Wasn’t anyone watching it?”
The jabberwocky raised one claw and questioned, “Maybe it left on its own. Did anyone turn it off?”
The Cat reversed the direction of its spinning head, demanding, “How could it just disappear? I’m the only one that can disappear. Cheshire Cats can do that you know.”
Dropping his gold watch, the White Rabbit slouched down to the ground with his ears and his whiskers drooping. “Now we are really out of time. We’re doomed. We’re DOOMED!”
The Unicorn then suggested, “Why don’t we just follow the footprints?”
“Footprints? What footprints?” cried Holmes.
“Watson, you said there were no signs.”
“Well I did not see any,” I replied rather embarrassed. “I did not see anything useful. Why don’t you come take a look? You’re the detective. This is your area of specialization.”
This entire mad tea party adventure was beginning to get to me. Normally I could handle Sherlock’s superiority in everything related to his cases, but here nothing was as it seemed and everything seemed so strange and unreal. It was as if logic and common sense had been turned completely upside down. Yet, somehow Sherlock had still maintained his rational composure. How does he do it? Sherlock walked over to where the Time Machine had been standing and examined the area carefully. He took out his pocket magnifying glass, got down on the ground and studied certain areas with even more scrutiny. I watched him closely but could not detect what he was looking at, so I just waited until Sherlock stood up. “Well?” I finally asked him, “What did you find?
Sherlock stood there looking down at the ground and answered, “I am not quite sure yet.
