Chapter Twenty-One

Lexa

I can’t believe I’m sitting in the bookstore with a group of women, drinking wine and talking about books. Never did I think I’d be the type of woman to join a book club. Here I am though, and I’m actually having a great time. These ladies are funny, and they seem genuinely interested in my life. I can’t complain.

“We want to hear your story, Lexa,” Karen says as she refills my wine and leans back in her chair, getting more comfortable.

“How long does this book club last?” I ask with a laugh.

“We have no set ending time. We stay here until we’re dragged away,” Karen says.

“We’re a safe space,” Anita says. “This is where we can talk about anything. It’s not just a book club, it’s a therapy session. We might be a bit of gossips, but we don’t talk about things that are supposed to stay private.”

“Agreed, honey, we all need to have a place to go where we can rant and rave, or shout with joy. Those who try to make it all alone end up depressed. We all love our families, but friendships are something to be cherished. You became our friend the second you stepped inside,” Lorene says.

I find I want to share with these women. I’ve kept this all inside for so long and I feel like I’m going to explode if I don’t get some of it out. I drink about half my glass of wine, feeling the effects of it. We’ve already been here an hour talking about Sylvia Day’s Butterfly in Frost. I have to admit I might’ve cried a couple of times reading it, and I really didn’t expect the ending it had. Dang, it’s a good book.

After the book talk, we started talking about our personal lives. I’ve just sat back and listened, loving hearing all of their stories.

Anita used to be a dancer, and she even gave a few twirls for me. Even though she’s in her seventies now, she’s still graceful and beautiful. Karen has a slew of grandkids and she was more than happy to show us lots of pictures. There’s so much more but I can’t process it all. Now they’re all looking at me and my story’s on the edge of my tongue.

“Come on, we don’t bite,” Karen says.

“Not unless the hubby wants me to,” Lorene says, making all of us laugh.

My glass gets refilled and I decide why not spill it. “I had to leave Chicago. I was fifteen when I got pregnant with Chance. I know, stupid, stupid, stupid, but I was young, in love, and very foolish. I have to say when my seventeen-year-old boyfriend found out, he handled it better than I did. He graduated a month before Chance was born. He didn’t go to college, but worked at his father’s mechanic shop. He made decent money and we had a nice home. I finished school, but it was tough. Sadly enough, there were plenty of high school kids who got pregnant and they had a daycare program at our school.
