ATTINA

I'm awoken by Raven getting up and a flap of Hazel's massive wings. Before I know it I'm standing searching for my sword. I was in such a deep sleep it's a little disorienting to all of a sudden be awake and moving. It takes me a second to realize I was lying on top of my sword— a second which could have cost me my life.

I reach down and pick up my sword, noticing Allister is already at the ready with his hand held before him. I scan around our campsite. Everyone is staring into the trees, but I don't hear anything.

"What's going on?"

No one answers.

I close my eyes, comforted in the fact that I know Allister will protect me if anything happens. I feel the ground beneath me and instantly realize there is someone or something walking toward us. I can feel four feet but by the weight of those feet its either a horse weighed down by a saddle and body or something much more sinister.

I open my eyes and whisper, "They're about forty feet in and coming straight for us." I take in a deep breath and wait. I think about grabbing my bow and arrows but in the trees it wouldn't be much help. I can do this. I can take on whatever is coming at us. I need to believe in myself. Before I truly feel ready, a horse breaks through the tree line. But the horse is far enough away, it's only the silhouette of one, but I can tell it's a horse with a rider.

I hear a noise from my right. "Mylo."

I turn my head to Raven. "What?"

"I can smell him. It's Mylo. But I can't tell who's on top of him."

Without a second thought I swing onto Raven's back. It's not until I'm up there though that I realize I easily did it one handed with a sword in my other hand, and I didn't kill myself doing it. That's even better than how I got on her bareback at the tree. I could get used to this Fae strength.

I smirk. "Well why don't we go give them a proper welcome?"

Raven shakes her head as I grab her mane, kick her, and we're off racing through the trees. I sense Hazel in the air at our backs as Allister yells behind me, "Attina wait."

I hear, Get back here, shouted in my mind but I ignore him. We race ahead, dodging trees as we race through the night.

We get about halfway to Mylo when I lift my sword in the air and shout, "Who are you!"

I hear, "Attina?" Then Raven slams on the brakes, almost sending me flying over her front end. Since I'm not in a saddle it takes latching my legs down on her with all of my Fae strength to keep myself astride her. I end up with the front half of my body wrapped around her neck, good thing I had the presence of mind to hold my sword out away from Raven.
