Chapter Fifteen

Ice

Jenna appeared in the small room dressed in a bathrobe. To call her pissed off didn’t begin to cover it. She had responded to my panicked phone call, but she clearly wasn’t happy about it.

“I am not a taxi service.”

“Jenna, it’s an emergency. You know I wouldn’t ask if it wasn’t. Lives are at stake.”

“Lives are always at stake. I’m on vacation.”

I noticed her attire, and the fact that there was an M embroidered on the robe. “Why are you in someone else’s bathrobe?” She gave me a significant look, and I started to realize why she was so annoyed to be interrupted. I burst out laughing.

“It’s the middle of the afternoon,” I teased.

“Not in Spain.” She scowled. I clearly wasn’t helping her mood.

“Yes, Theo,” I heard James say on the other side of the small room. “I know it’s hard to get into the Met Gala on short notice. I have complete faith in your ability to make it happen. If anyone can do it, it’s you. Hundreds of lives are depending on you. You’ve got this.”

“Just get us to New York, and then you can go back to what you were doing,” I promised Jenna. “I owe you big for this.”

“Damn right you do,” she grumbled. With a roll of her eyes, she hauled me over to where James stood with his back to us, on the phone. She grabbed a fistful of his hair, and then we were standing in the middle of the office lobby, the same place where less than a week ago, James tricked me into a vision and followed me down the hall. Theo, standing at his desk with a phone to his ear, looked startled. Jenna looked pointedly at him, said, “your problem now,” and then blinked away.

Theo took in the sight of us for a second. We were still wearing the clothes from yesterday’s cocktail party, in which we had run, climbed, and slept. I was pretty sure my hair was sticking up in several directions, and I was barefoot. Theo gave a long-suffering sigh.

“Let’s get you two cleaned up.”
