Chapter 29

Hunted

The group filed into the room where Grom was standing proudly behind the battered spy. The man shook on his knees, not bound but too scared to move. Celeste drew her sword. Vale stepped in front of her, cutting her off.

“He’s a spy. We need to kill him so he can’t tell anyone where we are,” she said.

“Who sent you?” Caelan knelt down and looked at the man.

He pulled a small blade from his belt, playfully dancing it between his fingers as if only partially paying attention. The man looked at Caelan and then back at the ground. Grom grabbed the man’s shoulder with his large troll hand and squeezed.

“Use tongue . . . or Grom take . . . tongue.”

“W-what do you want to know?” the spy gasped, and his whole body shook.

“Who . . . sent . . . you?” Caelan repeated with extra emphasis.

“It doesn’t matter. My master already knows you are here.” A smug expression formed on his face. “He sees all. Nothing is hidden from him. His armies are on their way here now. You will not escape. They will hunt you to the ends of the earth. You will beg for death before the end!” He started laughing a sickly, unnerving laugh.

“Who is your master?” Caelan flicked his blade across the man’s shoulder, nicking his skin.

The man winced and then smiled an eerie, sadistic smile. “He’s the one who will destroy you all. He will bring down every kingdom that opposes him, and he will remake this world in her name.”

“Vespera . . . ” Dante said.

The spy glared in rage. “How dare you speak her name in vain! Heathen! Your ways will be your ruin!”

Caelan backhanded the spy across the face hard enough to draw blood. “Less back talk, more answering. Who is your master?”

“I serve the glorious Lord Valron.”

Sera gasped. “That was the name of the man we saw in Vargr, the one who was turning people to monsters.”

Dante looked to Vale. “If he is a servant of the Red Empress and he’s captured Azalea, we don’t have much time.”

“Time? You’re already dead. You’re just too stupid to know it. After word spreads about Vargr, even the Coalition will bow to their knees,” the captured spy laughed.

“Pretend I don’t know what that is,” Caelan replied.

The spy laughed. Vale grabbed Caelan’s arm and pulled him away, guiding him out of earshot. The others gathered around them.

Vale motioned for them to follow him and moved out of ear shot.

“I don’t know what that is either,” Celeste commented.

“The Coalition of Kings is an alliance forged between all the free folk outside the wall and fueled by their mutual hatred of Parisia,” Rivik answered.

“Why would they join forces against us? What did we ever do to them?” Celeste asked.

“Is that a joke?” Caelan asked.

Celeste glared. “How dare you? Parisia is the greatest kingdom in all the lands. You barbarians are always out to get us because we have what you don’t. Maybe if you tried working with us instead of acting like savage rooki, you could learn something.
