Introduction to “Echoes of What Was”

Any story of sufficient size and breadth requires that some details be sacrificed in the telling. To recount every footstep and emotion would require a lifetime to write and another to read. This particular scene was cut from Hunter’s Moon not due to a lack of merit but simply because it was time for the story to move ahead. Tormjere and Kataria had been running across the kingdom for some time now, seeking the hoped-for protection of her uncle, and there was little to be gained from extending the journey.

And yet it always stuck with me.

I continued to recall these events as fact long after the book was published, even to the point of accidentally referencing it in Weaponforger. While not the most dramatic, it was a notable moment in Kataria’s deepening relationship with her goddess, one which also provided a glimpse into the history of their ever-expanding world.

It takes place concurrently with the previous story, not long after their narrow escape from the ambush in the alleys of Bexville and just before their arrival at the conflict Enna was tragically mired in. It was a time when hunger and fear were their only travelling companions, and the comforts of Kataria’s royal life were nothing but a distant memory…
