CHAPTER FIFTEEN
It didn’t take long for all the Krepps to understand that there were no enemies left to fight. Their disappointment could be seen through childlike frustration as they threw their weapons on the ground, whining in their throaty language and spitting everywhere.
Effie regained consciousness soon after Steffen saved her life, though she was confused and let out cries of agony that wrenched Cleve’s heart. Reela took Effie’s pain even worse than Cleve, grabbing her stomach as she shed empathetic tears for her friend. Effie was quickly given more caregelow before Reela helped put her to sleep. Then the wounded mage was taken to the medical building with the twenty others who’d been injured. Fortunately, none had died, nor would they during the night. They had the chemists of the Academy to thank for that.
Signs of the battle would linger along the northern side of the school, reminding everyone of this night for weeks. Cleve was shocked that so few enemies had caused enough damage to look like an army had attacked. Nothing was destroyed, but the faculty houses, along with the dining hall and the storage house, had burns and cracks in their ceilings and walls. Cleve couldn’t help but consider it an ominous sign. It seemed that everyone could feel it in the tense air as they stared in silence at the damage.
Battle was coming again.
Terren would be even busier than usual preparing the school as best he could. Cleve hadn’t had time to speak with him since the quick moment they had together when Cleve returned to the Academy. But it was good to know their argument hadn’t created a sour memory for Terren as it had for Cleve. He’d dwelled on it when he should’ve been worrying about other matters. I won’t waste more time doing that.
Reela came with him as he approached Terren and prepared to wait until his uncle had a moment. Instructors crowded around him as he spoke with Rickik. By the sound of it, Terren was explaining the difference between hearing a trumpet and the Redfield bell, the trumpet meaning something suspicious or dangerous while the bell signified an imminent attack.
Vithos translated as Terren spoke. The Elf then told Rickik that his Krepps should wait until they heard the bell before thinking they needed to fight.
“But the bell doesn’t always mean it’s time to fight,” Terren explained. “You’ll hear the bell tomorrow. It will chime three times, which does not mean battle,” he reiterated, cringing as if already anticipating Rickik would get the wrong idea. The headmaster held up three fingers in front of the Krepp’s eyes. “Three dings means meet at the center of the school. But if it continues to ding, then it means battle.”
Rickik’s reptilian face had deep lines of confusion as he listened to Vithos. He asked questions, and the Elf answered, giving Terren a little break. Jackrie was one of the instructors gathered around him and took this as her chance to ask one of the questions Cleve wanted answered as well.
