A tense silence settled over the car and Matt had to wonder what Michelle was thinking. Normally, she was a happy, pragmatic kind of person, yet she thought she was being haunted? It all seemed far-fetched. Was her ghost against his theater, or all theaters in general? He decided to sidestep the topic, just to be safe. “So, you think all this is about the theater I plan to build?”

“Maybe.”

He couldn’t help it, he had to ask. “Why would a ghost care about my theater? And why would they haunt you?”

“It’s more what the theater means to me,” she said.

He glanced her way, then back at the road. “What does it mean to you?”

“When I was young I was into the theater and it—I—I don’t want to do that again.”

Now he was even more curious. “Were you disappointed by a part or a play or a performance or something?”

“You could say that,” she muttered, staring out the window.

“I understand disappointment,” he assured her, thinking of Rick and the trouble he’d caused. “I even understand not wanting to think about the topic.” He’d come close to finding a whole new career over the whole ordeal. “And I suppose If someone was coming after me and I felt vulnerable, I’d probably blame the most painful spot in my life too. But being haunted is still pretty strange. I’m not so sure I’d take it sitting down.”

“What makes you think I’m sitting down?”

That made him reconsider what he really knew about the woman. “Okay, you’re right, what are you doing to figure this out?”

“I have some friends who are helping me look into it,” she finally answered with a toss of her head.

Once again, Matt’s thoughts came back around to Rick and all the problems he’d caused. Michelle had reminded him that by dating her, he was opening himself up to being judged, or even misled, again. Even after a full year of heartache and financial disaster, not to mention the legal ramifications of what Rick had done, here he was, walking right back into a situation where he could be judged unfairly. Was he ready for this? Somehow, he’d grown comfortable with starting over here on his own, as if not having a business partner made it all okay. But getting involved with Michelle had happened so naturally, and he’d been so fascinated with her; he hadn’t even considered what it would mean. She was networked with the entire town. Would her friends look into him as well? The idea soured his stomach. People would definitely find out about Rick and what had happened.
