Chapter 33

As they neared the end of the pathway, Marci ran toward them, and stopped just short of them.

“I thought I’d missed you guys.” She huffed, and then looked to Ryanne. “Your sister and Blake’s house was broken into.”

“What? Were they back?” Ryanne asked.

“No, they got there just after Pearce arrived I think. Marty got the call from a Luke something? A guy who works for Blake at Holloway’s. He was stopping by to pick up a part and noticed the front door was open, so he called the station. Marty told him to stay put, and sent Pearce out. Don’t know any more yet.”

“Luke didn’t see anyone leave? Any cars around?” Max asked, as they walked to the parking lot.

“I don’t know. I’ve gotta stay here and wait for Jake to take him back to O’Leary’s. I’ve got shift duty there tonight with Remmy.”

“Alright, give a call if you need anything. I’m taking Ryanne to Blake’s.”

Marci nodded, and jogged back down the pathway through the flurries, as Ryanne and Max got in the car.

“I knew you should have left.” Max said as he started the car.

“What? I’m safe. Everyone’s safe.”

“Someone is after you. As soon as you get your things, you’re leaving.”

“What if the attack was aimed at Aurina, or Blake even?”

“We’ll be looking out for them. You don’t have to worry about it.”

“I’m going to worry. Why is someone after us Max?”

“I don’t know, but the Chief and I went to question Ben and Anne Marie’s mom, Beth, this morning. Beth is out of the question, but I’m not sure about Ben. I think I need to make another visit to his place, and see if he has an alibi for his whereabouts today. I didn’t see him at the funeral.”

“Okay.”

Max put the windshield wipers on, and radioed the Chief.

“Chief, I’m on my way to Blake’s with Ryanne.”

“Ten four Max. Pearce will fill you in when you get there, and I want you to stay there alright?”

“Will you be coming?”

“Watts and I are heading to Ben Foster’s place right now.”

“I was thinking the same thing.”

“Ten four. Over and out.”
