Of course we had a problem. Nothing could go smoothly, could it?

Vashe’s ears were twitching and she looked like she wanted to yell at someone. Anyone. “So this skeleton crew that was supposed to be manning the town? Yeah, the fucking Gorvani army is there. There’s soldiers and patrols everywhere. A few of us managed to sneak through and get into the nexus, but we aren’t locking that place down without a few battalions coming down on our heads. And forget wiping out the Gorvani presence in there; there’s way too many to even consider that.” She kicked a trash can over with a frustrated scream and slammed her hand into the portal control machine.

I looked over to Tiq and asked, “What do we do?” as if anyone was going to have any answers.

She cocked her head to the side, but instead of her doll-like expression, her face was still scrunched up with worry. “Removing the Gorvani won’t be possible. Extricating the townsfolk while they’re still there won’t be possible. Infiltrating the facility will be much, much harder.”

“What happens if we call this thing off?”

She shook her head. “The royals get all the arcanic energy they want and need.”

There was a lot of chatter and debate, but no one could offer a reasonable solution.

Vashe had wandered off to maybe punch something else, but she came back and silently listened to the conversations, clearly getting more and more annoyed as time went on. Finally, she slammed her hand down and yelled, “Enough!” Everyone stopped and turned to her. “Not a single one of you is proposing the only plan left.” After no one rose to that, she scoffed and said, “We have to go ahead with the sabotage but forget the townspeople.”

There were various gasps and murmurs. I stayed quiet, and so did Tiq.

Vashe went on, “You think I like the idea? You think I wanna kill a bunch of innocent people? Well, I don’t. But they’re all gonna die anyway, aren’t they? Along with pretty much everybody else. So either we do this thing and stop the empire from getting what they want, or we wring our hands and those people die anyway.” Still, no one said a word. “Tell me I’m wrong! Someone, anyone, tell me I’m wrong!”

“You’re not,” I said. Everyone turned to me and I tried to ignore the sinking feeling in my stomach. “You’re not wrong. Unless someone can think up a better plan right this second, the only recourse we have is to bust up the place and…let the fallout be what it will.”

One side of Vashe’s mouth turned up in a grudging smile. She didn't say anything, but I think she was surprised I’d been the one to agree with her. On some level, so was I. But it was the only thing to be done, as far as I could tell. “We all knew fighting the empire was going to be rough. I didn’t think it was going to be kill a town rough, but here we are.
