The hit of rum eased the tension coursing through my veins, but did nothing to diminish the tenderness emanating from the multiple injury sites all over my body.
My mother continued to grumble about my willingness to break the law and the frequency with which I seemed to find myself involved in altercations. She did so at a volume just loud enough for me to hear and kept glancing at me to make sure I was listening even though her body was turned away in the pretence that she was talking to herself.
I let it wash over me. In truth, I knew she was right, and I gave her too much cause to worry altogether too often. However, to be fair, she only knew about the current events because she had chosen to insinuate herself in my life again.
Dad was inspecting the visible wounds â those on my face where I likely had a black eye forming and a cut to my chin from someoneâs boot that could do with a stitch or two.
The dachshunds were under my chair, quiet and calm now that the excitement was over.
Big Ben reappeared with a med kit from my room. Heâd also found his shirt and shoes and had his jacket hooked over an arm. The plan for this evening had been to annoy the locals in the bar, see what answers we could scare up and then head out to scour the village before scoping out the land around the mine once more.
That plan had been changed by the residents of Playford when they elected to avoid the bar and, in turn, us. I still wanted to find out where they were though. They were congregated somewhere, I felt certain of it and that had to mean they were currently involved in their criminal enterprise.
News of my altercation with Kevin, Terry, and their friends would have reached them by now. I was certain of that too, so the question was whether they would now abandon what they were doing, believing I was out looking for them, or whether they would believe the injuries inflicted, which Kevin and friends would exaggerate to make themselves feel better, were sufficient to deter me from any further activity tonight.
I was willing to bet it would be the latter. Gratefully, I took a pair of paracetamol and two ibuprofen from Big Ben, which I downed with the last of my strong rum and coke. He got me to lift my chin so he could clean up the cut and apply a couple of steri-strips to close the wound.
I hadnât gone looking for a mirror â I had no desire to see my reflection at this time. It was bad enough that my mother had to see it. Getting to my feet, I performed what I call a âbasic body systemsâ check: my arms and legs worked, I could see and hear, and none of my teeth were loose. Stiffness and soreness
