CHAPTER 18

“Whoa,” Devon said, holding up his hands, his eyes wide.

Despite her pounding heart, Paige wiggled the sword at him. “Yeah, that’s right. I’m armed and dangerous. So don’t try anything.”

“I’m not,” he murmured, his hands still raised. “What are you doing here?”

“Never mind. You don’t get to ask questions. How did you find me? Did you implant some kind of tracker on me while you held me hostage?”

Devon’s dark brows knit together, and he shook his head. “No.”

Paige jabbed the sword forward. “Then how did you find us?”

“I heard you. You’ve been chattering for, like, ten minutes.”

Paige slid her eyes closed, licking her lips as realization coursed through her. “Damn it,” she hissed.

“What are you doing here?” Devon asked again.

“None of your business,” Paige snapped.

“O-okay,” Devon stammered. “It’s just that you’re in my house, slinking around in the secret passages, so it feels like it is my business.”

“Well, it’s not,” Paige argued.

Devon slid his gaze sideways, her features pinching. “What do you expect me to do here? Just close the panel and let you roam around in there?”

“Maybe,” Paige said as her mind raced for a solution.

Devon screwed up his face. “I can’t do that. Could you stop swinging that sword at me, please?”

“No, I will not,” Paige said, lifting the sword higher.

Devon leaned away from her, tugging his chin backward. “It’s just that one slip of that thing could really cause a major issue.”

“Oh, really?” Paige asked, bobbing her head up and down. “Could it? Aww, I feel so sorry for you. NOT!”

“You’re still angry. Okay. That’s fair.”

“Is it? Thank you. Thank you, Devon. Thank you so much for validating my anger and saying it’s okay. I really appreciate that.”

Devon sucked in a deep breath, his eyebrows raising as he flicked his gaze to the floor. “I really can’t do anything right for you, can I?”

“Spare me your woe-is-me crap,” Paige snapped.

Dewey raised a digit in the air. “Actually, there is one thing you could do that would be right for her.”

Devon flicked his gaze to the dragon, his eyes narrowing. “Please don’t say die or anything snarky like that.”

“Quiet, dimples, I’m making a request.”

“Your acrimony about my looks is really disturbing.”

“Cry me a river, Devon,” Paige said. “Just let him talk.”

Devon held his hands up in front of him again, flicking up his eyebrows.

“Give us the Living Goo your father keeps here, and let us go.”

Devon’s forehead crinkled, and his eyes slid from Dewey to Paige. Paige lifted her chin, keeping the sword raised.

“Is he serious?”

“Of course I’m serious, muscles. Does it look like I talk for fun?”

Devon screwed up his face at Dewey’s comment. “What do you need Living Goo for?”

“You don’t get to ask questions,” Paige said.

Devon stared at her, with his eyes narrowed. “Are you going after the chaos gem?”

“I said you don’t get to ask questions.”

Devon tilted his head, giving it a shake. “Paige, you really shouldn’t do that.”

“Yeah, I know. I should just stay here and marry you, right? No thanks, pass. Now give us the Goo and let us go.
