Dante couldn’t really put how he was feeling into words, but content was probably the closest he could think of as he dipped his wrist under the faucet as the tub began to fill. It was slightly warmer than tepid so it wouldn’t aggravate Liam’s temperature, which wasn’t high enough to be concerning but enough to make him feel like shit.

It was an unexpected twist in their blossoming relationship, and if Dante had been a superstitious man, he might have been worried. As it was, he didn’t have a lot of hope that Liam would be interested in something more once he finally got a taste of what Dante wanted.

What he really wanted.

After all, Liam was young and—as it turned out—also a virgin.

It had given Dante pause but not for long. Liam was old enough and experienced enough to make up his own mind about what he expected out of a relationship. He was one of the unfortunates who had had to grow up and mature a lot faster than his peers because he had been forced to raise himself. A lot of the men working for Dante had grown up that way, and it created a need to control everything in them.

For Liam, however, it created the opposite. It created a need to search out someone to hold him close, to protect him, to show him in every single way that he was worthy. And Dante had no problem with that.

It would only get tricky when they returned to real life.

He didn’t mind, of course. Not when there was the promise of keeping Liam as his without the added complication of the bodyguard contract between them. Dante was going to keep his promise too. He was going to take down the little shit that had Liam’s life all twisted around, and then he’d spend the rest of his days—for as long as Liam wanted him—making sure no one ever got close enough to scare him again.

With a sigh, Dante poured the bubbles into the bath—a lavender scent, which was soothing enough to tame the high tension in Liam’s body—and watched them rise to the top. When it was close enough, he turned the water off, then went back to the bedroom where Liam was spread out on the bed.

He looked comfortable there, which added to Dante’s suspicion that the room was Liam’s to begin with. It was cold and impersonal, but there were little touches all over—like the framed piece of an original Mozart composition on the wall, the tiny cello figurine on the dresser, and, of course, dresser full of clothes that would have only fit Liam—that told him this wasn’t just a guest room.

He’d talk to him about it later, though—determine if this was something done out of self-sacrifice that required a punishment or just Liam trying to distance himself from something unpleasant.

For now, he would pamper his sick boy.

The rest would come after Christmas.

Kneeling on the bed, Dante brushed fingers through Liam’s hair, and his eyes slowly opened.
