~ Chapter 15 ~

“I’m sorry I’ve involved you in this.” Dale watched Grace as they pulled up outside the Brent house.

She’d been quiet on the drive over. Maybe processing his confession about prison. Maybe as surprised as he was at the level of personal information they’d shared over the reception desk in the community hall. He’d never done it before, just told someone about the major trigger points of his life. A stranger, really, and yet, Grace didn’t feel like a stranger. This silence between them didn’t stretch unnaturally. They just lapsed into quiet. Sharing something other than words.

He’d felt nothing like this before.

Grace took a deep breath. “It’s okay. If he feels comfortable with me being there, then I’m glad I can give him that safety while helping you and the police.”

He stared into the pale green eyes, now like shallow seawater. She made one of those strange smiles, her mouth mobile, her expression just a little wicked. “Stop it, or we’ll never get anything done.”

He felt it as well. The rising sexual tension between them. Grunting, Dale left the car. They walked up the path, the rain a hammer on the tarmac and soil, abusing them in its turn, and the door opened before they reached it.

“Come in.” Catherine managed a wobbly smile. “We’re in the kitchen. It’s warmer in there and less formal. Charlie feels safe. He’s having a good day, so you might gain some more information.”

Dale nodded. “Thank you. We’ll be as brief as possible. I don’t want to upset anyone.”

They followed Catherine down the hall. She’d dressed in pale colours, one item of clothing blending with the next, making her appear ephemeral, almost not existing in her own life. The kitchen sat at the back of the house, and despite the weather, Dale could see it looked over a well-tended and sizable garden. The kitchen itself was modern, sleek, organised and surprisingly colourful. This room felt like Catherine allowed her personality to creep out of the box she’d coutured for herself. The illusion of the nice, upper-middle class woman who sent her only son to the cathedral school. Not the younger sister of an organised crime boss.

Charlie sat curled up on the sofa with an iPad and earphones on. His face was a mask of concentration.

She waved at him, trying to draw his attention.

When he caught sight of Dale, he looked confused for a moment, until he saw Grace, then he smiled. “Hello.”

“Hi, Charlie. Do you remember why we’re here?” She walked over and sat in the armchair next to Charlie’s sofa.

The young man nodded. “We need to talk about what happened the night my mind was opened. I get it now. I have to explain it all to you, so we can start showing the way. Without those of us who have already entered the portal explaining how to reach the next level, how can you know? I can’t keep it a secret. It would be selfish.”

Dale glanced at Catherine. Large tears hovered on the mascara of her eyelids.
