James Gadsden, the president of the South Carolina Railroad Company, negotiated with Mexico to purchase the land later known as the Gadsden Purchase. Gadsden hoped to build a railroad there.

The Oregon Trail

The two most important trails west were the Santa Fe Trail and the Oregon Trail. Both started in Independence, Missouri. The Santa Fe Trail stretched southwest about 900 miles (1,450 km) across the Western plains to Santa Fe, New Mexico. Traders used the trail to send manufactured goods to Santa Fe and silver and furs back to the East. Although settlers also used the Santa Fe Trail to move to New Mexico, Colorado, and other parts of the West, the trail was primarily a commercial route.
