Investigation of Fourniret

As the investigation into the actions of Fourniret, a number of unsolved murder cases were brought into consideration as possibly being attributed to Fourniret. One of these cases was the murder of Joanna Parrish, in May 1990. A British teaching assistant who had been working in Auxerre, Burgundy, France. Joanna was kidnapped, raped and strangled to death before being disposed of in a nearby river. The similarities between her murder and many of those committed by Fourniret automatically arose suspicion.

Fourniret has always denied abducting and killing Joanna, but when his wife Olivier gave her confessions, she described a murder of an unnamed woman which was eerily similar. Joanna had apparently advertised in a magazine for English language teaching and babysitting, and Fourniret was known to read the advertisements for babysitters in the same magazine. Olivier’s account of the murder included details of the injuries inflicted on the unnamed victim, and these matched the injuries found on the body of Joanna, information which had not previously been released to the media.

Olivier told the investigators how they had abducted the victim during rush hour in the evening, in Auxerre. She then drove the van towards an area of the countryside nearby while Fourniret beat the young woman until she no longer made any noise. According to Olivier, this victim, once Fourniret had finished with her, was disposed of in a ‘watercourse’ nearby.

However, DNA testing on semen found in Joanna’s body was not a match to Fourniret, a blow that devastated her parents who had believed they finally had some sort of answer and justice for their daughter’s death. But it was far from over. DNA testing was still fairly new when the testing was done in 1993, and it turned out that Fourniret’s DNA was tested using a system that was incompatible with the system used to test the semen sample. In 2009, the father of Joanna, Roger Parrish, met with French investigators regarding the DNA evidence, only to be told that the evidence had been lost.

Despite denying any part in the murder of Joanna Parrish since his arrest, Fourniret finally confessed in front of a French judge on February 16, 2018, that he was the man responsible for kidnapping, raping and killing the young woman. To date further legal action against Fourniret is still being considered.

Throughout the investigation into Fourniret, spanning France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark, Fourniret claimed he did not commit any rapes or murders between 1990 and 2000. However, Denmark police noticed that a police sketch of a rapist from one of their cases looked remarkably like Fourniret. Two other cases in the Netherlands showed remarkable similarities between the murders of their two victims and those of Fourniret.

One of the most interesting developments came about in 2006, regarding a highly controversial murder case from 1974. Marie-Dolores Rambla, aged just eight years old, was killed and the man believed to be responsible, Christian Ranucci, was beheaded in France by guillotine on July 28 that same year.
