Faster and Slower Alpha Rhythms, and the Way They Change during Different Phases of Ordinary Visual Perception

Recently, alpha rhythms were monitored during the earlier and later phases of a visuospatial perceptual task." The subjects' task was to indicate that they had either seen, or missed seeing, a prior visual cue. When alpha rhythms were measured during that prelude before the stimulus arrived, the greater alpha increase occurred in the slower alpha band (described here as ranging from "6-10 cps"). This increase occurred in the frontal, parietal, and occipital association areas. This preliminary increase in the slower (alpha + theta) activity predicted how successful the subjects would be in later seeing the cue.
