If your crisis plan doesn’t work the first time, that’s okay. Coping with intense emotions is hard. Changing behavior is hard. One of the most common experiences during crises is feeling physical pressure to do something. These sensations are often what drive impulsivity, so dealing with them is likely going to be an important part of your crisis coping plan. While some skills from this week can help, next week we’ll be giving you some skills specifically for the physical aspects of distress.

If you engage in your problem behavior this week despite Coping Ahead, don’t get too down on yourself! Use some self-soothing skills and, when you feel ready, use your Problem Solving skills to reexamine the parts of your coping skills plan that didn’t work. We have more skills in the upcoming chapters that might be helpful to incorporate into your plan as well!
