Chapter 29

Dynan stood briefly at the stairs, looking out over the ballroom. The pristine white stone gleamed brightly with moonlight. Pillars rose to the roof, casting long shadows across the floor. The huge windows allowed the light in, blue drapes pulled back. It didn’t seem all that long ago that blood had been spilled for the first time on that floor, marring its surface and now he was about to allow that to happen again.

He turned back to the stair as sounds of fighting broke out below; men shouting as swords clanged together. The noise of it echoed up to him for a moment. Ralion stood tensely beside him, looking all around. Their entry into the Palace had been easier than anticipated. The rooftop laser cannons had failed to activate and all four troop carriers deployed without incident. Even the jump out of the XR-30 while it hovered over the balcony went off without a problem.

An eerie silence followed the noise and Boral reported that all resistance inside the Palace had been quashed.

“I don’t like the feel of this at all,” Ralion muttered. Everyone else was inclined to agree.

Carryn moved to the landing, peering down into the main hall. She nodded up to them. Dynan saw Boral standing near the Throne Room hall, looking all around him. He directed the twenty men who stood with him to start checking doors. Allie moved down the stairs into the hall, a squad of men right behind him. The hall below was only dimly lit, full of shadows, and entirely too quiet.

They waited on a wide landing above the main hall. Large windows were concealed by closed drapes. Marc was turning to look outside when Carryn motioned to them, indicating it was time to go.

As they entered the hall, Dynan heard Boral communicating to one of the troop commanders outside, asking for more men. Allie was in position to begin his search of the Royal offices while Trevan and Lycon arranged their men in front of the Throne Room doors, waiting for Boral’s signal.

Dynan passed between two opposing doors that had yet to be checked. One entered the Grand Dining Hall on his right, and the other on the left led back into a maze of smaller offices for the Palace staff.

The doors burst open as he moved by them. At the same time, the windows at the stair landing shattered in a blaze of white light, curtains evaporating to shreds. The Throne Room doors opened and men poured out, overwhelming Trevan and Lycon’s comparatively small force. Through the front doors, Boral’s reinforcements burst in to face nearly three times their number.

Ralion grabbed Dynan’s arm and ran, yanking him out of the main rush over to the left side of the hall. Carryn,
