CHAPTER ELEVEN

I parked and walked into the building, asking for Officer Turner. I was directed to an office towards the back of the central hallway. I walked in and immediately saw Drew sitting at a desk, hunched over the pile of papers in front of him. Another officer approached me, and I said I was meeting Officer Turner, pointing towards him.

“Hey, Turner,” the officer hollered.

Drew looked up, squinting my way. I saw his face relax as he refocused on me from whatever he had been reading. He stood up and walked over to me, reached out and opened the waist high swinging door that separated the public area of the office from the official area, and waved me through.

“Glad you made it in, Deana.”

“Sorry it’s later than I thought. I got a little sidetracked.”

“No problem. Let’s get this report wrapped up.”

He sat back down at his desk after dragging a chair over from another area for me to sit in. He shuffled through a few folders and then pulled one out, squinting his eyes again as he read something off the page.

“Here you go,” he said as he put the typed report down in front of me. “Look this over and let me know if it’s complete or if I’ve left anything out, then I’ll have you sign. Here’s a pen.”

He handed me a pen and I looked down to read the report. It looked like it included everything, even a detailed description of Mudd. He must have gotten that information from Garren since I hadn’t had a chance to go back to the house and look through any files yet for records or pictures of the rabbits.

“It looks good to me,” I said. I signed and handed the forms back to him.

“Good. I’ll be questioning people in the area. Hopefully we’ll have some news for you soon. Just remember, this isn’t TV. These things take time in real life.”

“I understand. And you can probably skip talking to at least one person, Mr. Davies, at Fuhsaz’s. We spoke to him earlier and he...”

Drew leaned forward in his chair. “What do you mean, ‘we spoke to him’?”

I leaned back a little, feeling like I was about to be reprimanded. “Um, I mean me and Garren.”

“And why would you go speak to Mr. Davies about your missing rabbit, Deana?”

“Garren thought he might know something. I guess Gus — Mr. Davies — knows farmers that provide specialty or game meats for sale, and he thought if someone stole Mudd to sell to a meat breeder then Mr. Davies might have heard about it.”

Drew flopped back in his chair, pushing his hand through his hair. I hadn’t noticed before, but he had some gray strands peppering the light brown hair just above his ears.

“You can’t just go around questioning people, Deana. This is an active investigation. What if Mr. Davies does actually know something? Now that you two have talked he’ll know the police won’t be far behind, but when we go talk to him, he’ll have a story prepared, or have gotten rid of any evidence if he had it.
