Chapter 12

For some reason, Grant found it hard to settle after he’d finished dinner. Even though it had been early evening when they’d left River Cottage, the Cyprus Café was still open and he’d got takeaway moussaka for dinner. Thea Levonis’ cooking was still legendary. He couldn’t believe they still ran the café; they’d been there when he was a teenager.

Ryan had headed out to his property, keen to get home before his little girl had gone to bed, and Joe had a hot date with some girl who’d just moved back to town.

Grant raised his eyebrows. ‘A Monday night date? You must be keen.’

Joe chuckled. ‘Two lonely people and dinner at the Riverside Pub. I’m staying at Ryan and Jac’s, but I like to give them space.’ His grin was wide. ‘And if a pretty woman agrees to have dinner with me, who am I to say no?’

‘A local, you said?’

‘Yeah, I met Leah at the pub the other night. She’s moved back to town from Sydney. Going to live here and illustrate children’s books.’

‘Good to see the town growing,’ Grant said.

‘Yep, there’ll be more work for everyone, and good for the town economy. While I think of it, Grant, are you going to rent out the other side of your duplex?’

Grant shook his head. ‘Not yet, mate. Depends on how long I stay in town. But I’ll let you know as soon as I decide. Is she looking for somewhere to stay?’

‘No, I am. I’d rather live in town, now that I’m working locally. It was okay living out at Ryan and Jac’s farm between shearing jobs, but they need their space. Plus, I’ve picked up a couple of bar shifts at the Riverside Pub, so it’d be good to live in town.’

‘I’ll let you know as soon as I can.’

‘Thanks, mate. Appreciate it.’

Grant was restless when he got home. He ate his dinner, and watched the ABC news, and then looked at his watch.

It was too soon to go to bed. He’d go for a walk, and then when he got home, he’d call Sally and see if Beau had done anything about a school traineeship.

Grant walked for two hours, reacquainting himself with Bindarra Creek. It was still light for the first half of his walk, and he strolled past the sports oval where he’d played many games of football. Cutting across the paddocks, he came to the back of Fred’s garage where he’d had his first paid job pumping fuel.

Russ couldn’t understand why he wanted a job, and Grant had explained that his parents needed the money.

‘But do you get to keep some for yourself?’ Russ had asked with a grin. ‘I can tell you where we can get some good hooch.’

Grant had gotten out of it by telling him his parents took it all. He’d seen what drugs had done to his cousin, Brian. He’d started off on dope and then got into the hard stuff and ended up in jail. He wasn’t going down that track.
