Chapter Twenty

I opened my eyes just before dawn on Sunday. Nearly eighteen hours had passed, and during my hibernation, Viv had placed my laptop on the coffee table next to me. Crisscrossing my left leg under my right to adjust to a comfortable sitting position, I checked my email. A kid named Geoff had sent a message regarding the widow’s luncheon.

Miss Audrey,

Mr. Anderson asked me to send you my notes.

There were 14 ladies at the widow’s luncheon, plus Rabbi Silver. They ate crustless triangle sandwiches filled with a “cream cheese schmear and vegetables.” I’m pretty sure the only vegetable in there was cucumber. I can’t tell you if they were good because I didn’t eat them.

Someone made raspberry lemonade and someone else made carrot cake. A lady named Liza complained there wasn’t lemon in the frosting and another lady wearing a purple hat choked on a pecan while eating the cake. Or a walnut. It was a nut of some kind. She was okay after she got whacked on the back a couple times and spit it out.

There was a dramatic reading of the 23rd Psalm, the one about walking through the valley of death or whatever, and then an Elvis impersonator sang “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” Several people cried.

I overheard one lady tell her friend as they left she hoped it was a one-and-done. The raspberry lemonade was good, though. It had whole raspberries floating in it and ice cubes with mint frozen inside. Hope that helps.

Geoff
