Chapter 7
Georgia was up and about by the time I hung up with Colt. Sheâd planned a breakfast menu that didnât require a lot of baking or prep time, so she figured that as long as she arrived at the inn by seven-thirty, she would be fine. It was after seven now, and I wanted to do my part, so I headed toward the shower while she had her coffee. It was still raining, and the wind was still howling, but Georgia had been watching the news when Iâd looked in on her, and the forecast was still for calm air and sunny skies the following day. As far as I was concerned, tomorrow couldnât get here soon enough.
âTheyâre showing photos of the flooding in some of the low-lying areas,â Georgia said after I returned to the living room.
âWow. Look at that house. All you can see is the roof.â
âThat photo was taken in an area east of here. I guess the valley where the homes were flooded has seen even more rain than we have, and given the fact that the homes seem to have been built in a bowl, there was nowhere for the water to go.â
âI imagine it will take quite a while for that water to recede once it finally stops raining. Those poor homeowners. Were there any casualties?â
âNo. It sounds as if everyone got out safely. Another report before this one said that there are currently seven individuals unaccounted for in the valley north of here, where the rocky shoreline meets the river that flows down from the north. I guess thereâs been a landslide that took several homes with it and damaged dozens of others. Keep in mind that unaccounted for doesnât mean dead. The folks who have been reported as missing by their families may have simply found a place to wait out the storm but havenât bothered to check in.â
âI worry about all our friends when we have weather like this,â I said.
âI do, too,â Georgia agreed. âHowever, with all the party prep Iâve been doing the past couple of days, I feel like Iâve talked to almost everyone I know. Lonnie, Lacy, and the kids are all safe at home. They live on a piece of property thatâs elevated. I spoke to Shelby, who reported that while theyâve closed the Bistro, each of her employees has checked in, and everyone is safe. When I spoke to Velma about the food, she assured me that everyone connected to the bookstore was safe as well. The storm has been bad, but it hasnât had the catastrophic effect that some weather-related events have been known to leave in their wake.â
âThe roof over Coltâs patio is in his neighborâs yard, but heâs otherwise okay,â I informed my friend.
âOh no,â Georgia gasped. âThat could have been tragic if the roof would have hit someone on its way from Coltâs yard to the neighborâs.â
âYes, I guess it could have been. Luckily, it happened in the middle of the night.
