Isaac

Without even thinking about it much, Isaac and Hazel established a comfortable routine over the next couple of weeks that allowed them to spend at least two hours together. They’d fallen into the habit of meeting up outside the RV late at night after Isaac had locked up for the evening. He was usually the last person to leave, and always shot her a text letting her know he was headed out, and by the time he arrived at the RV she would be there waiting for him.

Hating the idea of her walking over alone at night, Isaac met her halfway along the route and they walked back to the RV holding hands, kissing and twirling around the other. They’d then slip into the trailer together, share a quick meal or a drink, chat about current events and talk about their day, and inevitably end up in bed.

It was usually too late for her to walk back afterwards, and she was still leery of being seen, so usually Isaac would drive off the job site and get her as close to Marcus’s house without being noticed. Or, at least, he hoped they weren’t being noticed.

One day, while going over some final details of the house with his contractor, Tony, the older man said something out of the blue that startled Isaac. “Like father, like son, eh?”

Isaac was puzzled for a moment. “What do you mean?”

Tony grinned broadly. “I mean the Davis girl. Considering what went on between your father and her mother, I guess it’s a sure shot that you’d be attracted to her daughter. You and Thomas have very similar taste—”

“Tony,” Isaac began sharply, feeling the irritation rise within him. “Don’t go there. And keep your mouth shut in town, okay?”

Tony looked abashed and apologized, but the remark left Isaac wondering who else knew about them.

One evening, as they lay together with her head resting on his shoulder, Hazel asked, “Do you ever wonder where our parents are?”

Isaac was mildly surprised, as it had become an unspoken rule that they didn’t talk about Simone and Thomas—ever. “His last credit card statement from nine years ago was a huge cash withdrawal in Tijuana. So I’m guessing they’re still living it up in Mexico.” He hoped he didn’t sound too bitter. He tilted his head to look at her. “I don’t care anymore. I no longer have any respect for the man. The only good thing to come of all this was that the family business has taken off since I inherited it. At least I can be proud of something.”

“You’ve done well,” she admitted admiringly. Then, after a brief silence, said, “I hate to admit it, but I miss my mom. Even after all this time, I’d love to be able to talk to her. To benefit from her wisdom.”

Privately, Isaac figured that Simone Davis was the last person one should go to for wisdom, considering the pain she had inflicted on her family, but he certainly didn’t voice that thought out loud.
