Beau had always started his mornings early to begin his ranch chores, and retirement from the sheriff’s department made no difference. He was up at four-thirty the next morning, and Sam followed suit.

“I need to check in at the shop and make sure Julio and Becky have everything under control,” Sam told him, handing over his coffee in his favorite huge mug. “If all’s well there, I plan to get over to Zoë’s and figure out what’s in that hidden room. She couldn’t stop talking about it last night before we left.”

“You’ll probably see me there. Darryl was already gathering tools to start the job, but he needs to wait until the guests have left for their day’s activities. I’ll tend to the horses and get a couple things out of the way before I head over.”

“Weird, wasn’t it, how that staircase and door were hidden down there?”

“Somebody built it to hide something. The bookcase was attached with some old hinges, like there was supposed to be some kind of mechanism that would cause it to swing open and reveal the space.”

“Seriously?”

He gave a shrug. “The piece wasn’t merely bolted to the wall. And if the previous owners wanted to wall off the basement forever, why didn’t they close off the opening with drywall?”

Sam could feel her excitement building. There was definitely a mystery here. What was behind the locked door?
