Chapter Thirteen
Outside, Kasim and I chitchatted about the body, life in general, and how he quit smoking. He had acupuncture in his ear. I thought this was ridiculous but it worked for him. We had turned to the topic of the department when a car pulled up and stopped abruptly in front of us. I almost grabbed my gun.
The driver door opened and Rick Calhill came storming out.
âWhy didnât you tell me about this?â he demanded, not even showing me a sliver of respect in front of Kasim.
âYouâre here, arenât you?â I said, taking a drag from my cigarette and exhaling in his general direction because I knew he didnât like it.
âAnd you brought a uniform with you? I have to find this out from Geiger?â
âI brought Kasimâthatâs his name, you met him alreadyâbecause you disappeared. I donât remember being told to account for you. You got all pissy after we met with Geiger so I thought you went to get your nails done or something to relax,â I said.
That got Rick steamed.
âCut the bullshit, Keegan. You tried to edge me out,â he said.
âYou wanted out.â
âThatâs not your decision to make,â Rick insisted.
âYouâre right. Itâs yours. And you did made it. Who am I to get in the way of that?â
âYou think youâre funny. Wait until Geiger hears what youâve done.â
âHow do you think he found out about this, genius? I spoke to him already. Covered for your ass, too. Even did the same with your wife,â I said.
âMy wife?â
âYes,â I said. âAnd I donât have time for this.â
I turned and went to open the door.
âHe called your cell, left a message. Then he called your house. He tried to get in touch with you,â Kasim said. Heâd stepped a little out of line but I appreciated him backing me up. I think he knew Rick was being a jerk.
I could have said more but Kasim had perfectly explained the situation. Rick probably felt like an ass. Good, I figured. He deserved it. I opened the door and went back to the apartment. Rick followed, staying quiet for once, thank God.
We got to the door of the apartment and I could sense Rick still breathed heavy. I needed him calm because I hated working with people stomping around angry. It unnerved me and it wasnât conducive to a productive working environment.
âHow much did Geiger tell you?â I asked.
Rick didnât answer right away, like he wanted to give me the silent treatment as punishment. He didnât realize how much I would enjoy silence from him. Most annoying people donât.
I looked at him to get him to respond.
âJust that you found Adlerâs son, dead in a bathtub. And that you think it wasnât a suicide,â Rick said. âYou didnât have to bring my wife into this.â
âYou didnât have to be a jerk for no reason. I did nothing wrong and actually, more right than you give me credit for,â I said.
âMaybe.â
âDefinitely. And I am telling you, from now on, no more of this âbetter than youâ shit you give me.
