Chapter Fifteen

Madison rolled into Stephen’s midsection, putting her head against his chest. He pulled her close, and she snuggled against him. “What are you thinking?” she asked, playing with his chest hair.

She heard him sigh. “That I’m getting into deep waters here. I just had the most incredible sex, and I’m holding my high school crush in my arms, and my mind is whirling about how to defend you, when what I would rather do is just enjoy this moment.”

She looked up at him. “Could you get into trouble for this?”

“It’s not exactly recommended. It’s considered unethical.”

“Could you be disbarred?”

“I suppose if you complained, I could be.”

Madison smiled. “I’m not complaining.”

He stroked her skin. “Neither am I. But it opens a host of potential issues. If it comes out that we have a relationship, and I lose and you go to jail, you could say that this relationship affected my ability to be your counsel. It could even be construed that I extorted sexual favors from you to provide you representation.”

“That’s silly.”

“Maybe. But there’s a long road ahead. A lot can happen between now and then.”

Madison sighed. “Are you saying we shouldn’t do this again?”

He studied her in the darkness. “God, I hope not. But it’s something to consider.”

Madison pushed up on her elbow. “Stephen, I know this is probably ill-timed, but I also have to think that maybe it’s not such a bad thing either. We’re both under a lot of stress. We’re attracted to each other. Why not enjoy this time that we have together?”

“Because emotions get involved. And when the stress hits the fan, and it will, we need to keep our feelings for each other out of it, or we could both get hurt.”

“You think that might happen? We could do that to each other?”

“It’s hard to imagine in the glow of our lovemaking, but yes, it could happen.”

She rested her head in her hand. “I just had the most amazing night of my life in the arms of a man who worshipped me, instead of degraded me, and now you’re saying this is a bad idea.”

His hand slid down her back and glided over her skin. “I don’t want to stop, believe me. It’s just in my experience, it doesn’t end well, and I don’t want that to happen to us.”

Madison frowned. “You’ve done this before? Sleep with a client?”

Stephen paused. “Once. Early in my career. It was a disaster. But I was stupid. I let my lust get the better of me, and it didn’t end well.”

Madison’s heart sank. “Is that what this is? Lust?”

His face fell. “God, no. I think that’s why I’m conflicted. I told myself I would never do that again. Get involved with a client, but here I am, in bed with you. And the only way I can reconcile it is because you’re not just a client. I think I’ve been secretly in love with you since tenth grade, and the more I’m with you, the more I want to be with you.
