CHAPTER FIFTEEN

He couldn’t get up, couldn't see. It was like his head was stuck in one place and his body in another. Every time he closed his eyes, even for blinking, another world came into view, and he had no idea where it was, or what it was. There was no chance of reconciling the two together.

Was it even real? What was it?

He heaved in a steadying breath and tried to pull himself into this world, only when he reached out, he was on the floor, and someone was rubbing their hand along his back and speaking to him, but the sounds weren't going in. His ears rang with a hum. In the end, he had to give up and collapse right where he was.

“I’m going to get help. You stay there.”

Natalie. Panic in her voice as she went to scramble away.

“No,” he barely managed. “I’m okay.” He was okay, if he stayed there and caught his breath, kept his focus so he didn't close his eyes and get sucked into that place in his head. The white room had come up and out and was ready to engulf him. He’d never experienced such a feeling like this before. “Call Phoenix.”

“Phoenix? You want him to come here and--”

“Check he’s okay. Please.” He managed to get his hands to his head and push against the sides of his temples. He didn’t have a headache or any pain, but something. A pressure. “Please, Nat. Just call him.”

"Okay." She fumbled with her phone, shaking fingers, trying to get to the right place. He’d have reached up to help if he was in a better state. But Phoenix was the logical leap he could make. Years ago, when he’d found Phoenix in the woods, left for dead in a world that spat the boy out, Cade connected with him. Not just connected the way a friendship blooms, but connected their minds. It was the only way to stop Phoenix going into the bloodthirsty frenzy of his transition from Human to Other, and the bond was probably what had kept Phoenix sane.

It was a dangerous thing to do, to link himself. He wouldn’t die if anything happened to Phoenix, but he’d feel the effect of it. Maybe it would make it that he’d never be the same again. If Cade died, on the other hand, then there would be a good chance Phoenix would go with him. The only hope they had was that as Phoenix got older and stronger, he’d be able to survive if the worst happened. And it did seem the more Phoenix aged, the more his wolf grew in strength. It wasn’t just his body, but his mind too.

Natalie balanced their daughter, Amara, on one hip as she held the phone to her ear. Shaking her head, she said, “Nothing. He isn’t answering.”

Cade—calmer now. His fast breathing slowed a little, but every fibre in his body felt like he’d been shot with several volts of electricity. “Try him again,” he ground out, his voice part growl, part man as the wolf in him reared up for protection.
