Chapter Ten

Meg finished putting the groceries away and went to work on the salad she planned to serve along with the spaghetti for dinner. She appreciated Luke helping her bring in the groceries, but he continued to linger in the kitchen, making her feel uneasy. Was he hoping for a slice of cake? “If you’re hanging around thinking that you’re going to get your dessert before dinner, you’re wasting your time.” Meg turned on the faucet and held the head of broccoli under the running water.

She turned as Luke moved toward the drawer that held the utensils and removed a knife. He was learning his way around her kitchen. That couldn’t be a good thing.

“I thought I could help you with dinner.”

“I appreciate the offer, but I’ve been doing this on my own since long before you ever arrived.” Where did that come from? “I’m sorry. That was rude.” Meg took a paper towel from the holder and blotted the vegetable dry before placing it on the cutting board. She picked up the cauliflower and began to rinse it.

“Things move faster when you work together.” Luke used the knife to cut off the stem of the broccoli. “Plus, I wanted to talk to you about something.”

Meg’s shoulders stiffened. She hoped he wasn’t going to bring up the discussion that had happened at the emergency room. That was something she’d rather forget.

“Don’t worry, I’m not going to ask you out on a date or anything.” Luke laughed.

There had been a time when Meg dreamed of Luke asking her to go out with him. They had grown up together as playmates. The best of friends. That changed when Luke had surprised Meg with an invitation to attend their junior prom as his date. He’d made a point of saying they’d go as boyfriend and girlfriend. Not just friends.

By that time, Meg already harbored a secret crush on Luke, but she believed he’d only thought of her as his best bud. Everything changed after their first kiss. Meg wrote every night in her journal about how she couldn’t wait to marry Luke and raise a family. She thought he had wanted it, too. In the end, he wanted to be a rodeo star more.

“Don’t even joke about that. I had a long talk with the girls last night when I put them into bed. I made it clear that once you have recovered, you will be heading back to Colorado.”

“That’s part of what I wanted to talk to you about.”

Meg’s stomach twisted. She hoped he hadn’t changed his mind about returning home. But why would he? Shortly after Luke left to chase his dream, his mother’s sister passed away, leaving Luke and his brothers a large chunk of land in Colorado. It wasn’t long after that his parents and three brothers all moved out west. There was nothing here for him in Whispering Slopes. Meg busied her hands opening the bag of carrots and pouring them into the colander. “What’s up?”

“Actually, there are two things.
