The Doctor and the Lawyer

“OH. DR. DINGER.” I blinked and blushed, hurriedly wiping my tears away as I glanced up at him.

I’d come running into his office, upset and overwhelmed, and flung myself into his arms before either of us had really registered what was going on. I shuffled out of his arms quickly, trying to fight my growing embarrassment. “I’m sorry,” I apologized.

He shook his head. “It’s alright,” he told me. “Everything will be okay.”

His assertion might as well have been a sledgehammer to my already broken heart.

“How do you know?” I whispered.

“I tell my son the same thing,” he said. “And we’ve managed to hang in there so far.”

“I hope the day will never come when you won’t be able to tell him that, then,” I said curtly.

“Me, too.” Dr. Dinger took my shoulders. “But let’s not worry about him. I’m sure that Hamilton would be upset if he knew I was talking about him anyway.”

I nodded, having no real response to that anyway.

“What are you upset about?” Dr. Dinger asked. “Is it a boy?”

“What?” I nearly gagged. “No.”

He gave me a smile. “I thought I’d ask. You’re in junior high now, and it seems like all the kids are dating younger and younger these days.”

“I don’t even know why,” I said. “I don’t want to date anyone. I don’t want my friends to change.”

“Unfortunately, that’s not up to us,” Dr. Dinger said. He pulled out my file from his pile on his desk. “But let’s head to an exam room, alright? Is your grandpa coming soon?”

I shrugged. “He’s supposed to be here,” I said. “He’s pretty good about getting here on time.”

“Well, we still have a little bit of time,” Dr. Dinger said, pointing to the clock on the wall. I still had five minutes until my appointment.

“Can I ask you a question, without him around?” I asked, suddenly curious.

“Sure. Patient-doctor confidentially applies unless you give the word.”

“Alright. Then I have a question,” I said.

“What is it?” Dr. Dinger asked patiently.

I sighed. “Well, I was wondering ... do you think there will ever be a day when my heart is normal?”

I already knew the answer. But I wanted to know what he thought.

I could tell from his expression that he hadn’t been expecting that question.

“I don’t know,” he said. “I think your best bet is to get a new heart.”

I might as well wish for a new wish, I thought. I nodded slowly.

“I will say, I don’t think it helps you any to stress out about it.”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“You’re young,” he said. “You have time. You might as well enjoy it. Hang out with your friends, try to relax. Don’t overexert yourself. I think that’s where a lot of these panic attacks are coming from.”

His response made sense, even if none of it was possible.

“I know,” he continued, “that school can be stressful. But surely there are some things about it you enjoy?”

I nodded again. “I like my art class,” I said.

“Maybe there’s more you can do with it, then,” he suggested.
