Chapter

Twenty-Three

I stood in the lobby of Peggy’s Pizza Parlor, waiting for my extra-large pizza to arrive. The smells of the restaurant invaded my senses, making my belly rumble. By the time it was done, I was half-tempted to throw open the box and eat some right there in the waiting area, but I forced myself to wait, carrying it out to the RV. I loaded up my laptop and got my pizza ready before settling down at the table.

I nibbled at the delicious, gooey pie as I did a Google search for YouTube videos involving ghosts. I found it within seconds.

A Real-Life Poltergeist in Lansing, Michigan, the title read. I watched the short clip a few times—it was the exact same one I’d seen on the mayor’s iPhone.

It wasn’t hard to figure out why the boys put it online. They were getting a lot of positive attention because of it, as evidenced by the hundreds of comments written below it. They were essentially online superstars, approaching a million hits on their video.

I groaned. Did I really have to be the one to tell Ron and Aimee about their sons’ wrongdoing? No, I decided. I’m here to find ghosts, not get teenage boys in trouble with their parents.

I stared at the video, noticing the username written below. It read: Posted by The Abra Cadabra Brothers.

It seemed like a strange username for the boys.

Abra Cadabra, a magician’s term.

I had a fleeting memory of myself as a child, doing god awful magic tricks in front of an audience made up of bored family members. My Aunt Irene bought me a book and a box set of “tools for conducting magic”—as the print on the front proclaimed. I never could master the tricks; either my hands weren’t fast enough, or I’d forget a step or two mid-trick.

It is a magician’s job to create illusions, using deceptive devices or sleights of hands. The posters of this video obviously considered themselves magicians.

I was flipping through The Abra Cadabra Brothers’ YouTube channel when I discovered a case-breaking clue.
