COAL

Coal attempted to push himself up, but Gideon put a firm hand on his shoulder which kept him from moving. Coal had never seen Cosmo with more fire than the dragon he faced.

To her credit, his aunt didn’t respond. They’d come to the Unseelie Court. Pissing off the Consort? Probably not the best way to start the conversation.

“Garzaxie!” Cosmo yelled.

Cosmo’s hobgoblin bodyguard popped into existence. “You screamed?”

“My dragon friend needs help. His mate has been kidnapped and he drained himself trying to find him. Is there anything you can do?”

Garzaxie glanced at Coal, scrunched up his nose, and disappeared once more.

Silenus moved behind his mate and wrapped his arms around Cosmo’s waist. A flower-covered tree sprung from the ground beneath them and formed a perfect chair. Silenus sat down in it, pulling Cosmo onto his lap.

Cosmo let his mate take control of the situation, but his glare remained firmly in place. Garzaxie returned, but before he could bring the bubbling cauldron toward Coal, Silenus held out his hand and stopped him.

“Is this why you are here, Dalinda, Queen of the Dragons?”

“No, Your Majesty.” Dalinda bowed her head respectfully.

If Coal wasn’t already on the ground, he would have been after seeing her action.

Silenus ran his hand down Cosmo’s side before resting it on his thigh. “I’m curious, then, why you brought a friend of my mate’s to us in such poor condition. Were you hoping to gain our favor with such an insulting display?”

“Of course not. Our clan rules don’t allow us to act when a dragon has gone berserk, particularly over the loss of a mate. The chances of them losing themselves to the dragon a second time are much higher. My nephew nearly died; I would not risk healing him only to give him a chance to complete the deed.”

Silenus glanced at Gideon next. “Do you have anything to add as Coal’s pack member?”

“He destroyed an entire city block and put me through a wall. It took four dragons to bring him down. I’m not saying I agree with Dalinda…but honestly, I can’t say that I don’t either.”

Coal groaned and closed his eyes. Sadly, they both had a point. The desperate fire to save Scout still burned within him. If he had his full strength, Coal couldn’t promise he wouldn’t repeat his actions.

He looked up at met the king’s gaze. “They’re both right. I have to find him. I…won’t stop.”

“Then I find myself curious…why are you here?”

Dalinda straightened her spine and smiled. “I’ve come to ask a favor, King Silenus. And I offer one of your choosing in return.”

Coal gasped and once more tried to push himself up. Making deals with the fae was never a good idea. Even though Silenus and Cosmo were friends…he couldn’t let her do it.

“A boon from the dragons. I find the offer hard to resist. Tell me what it is you want.”

“A way to find my nephew’s mate and bring him safely home,” Dalinda said.

“So you ask two favors of me. First to find the missing Jerrick boy, and the second to bring him home.
