Chapter Seventeen

The Blue Moon Inn, Lily’s pride and joy, wrapped me in its quiet ambiance when we walked inside. Monday was typically the slowest night, but still, even though it was quieter than usual, more than half the seats were occupied. The inn itself offered six suites in the historic building, each uniquely decorated with antiques and deluxe appointments. The dining area, with flickering candles and strings of fairy lights, accommodated a dozen tables arranged so each had some privacy.

In my silky, dark-blue sheath, heels, and with my curls pulled into a twist, I felt like a princess.

Soft harp music filled the air accompanying the soft laughter and the tinkling of silverware on porcelain.

Luke gave his name to the hostess, and she showed us to a table in the back corner, secluded from other diners.

“There you are!” Maggie said, obviously elated when she saw us.

She jumped out of her chair, knocking it back. The crash made other diners look in our direction, but Maggie laughed. I was glad to see her so happy. AJ stood up and smacked Luke on the arm in a typical guy greeting.

Then, he pulled out a chair for me. “For the birthday girl,” he said and kissed my cheek.

I caught Luke’s eye, and he winked as if to indicate this was all going in the right direction. We’d see about that.

“Dani? AJ and I got you a little something for your birthday.” Maggie handed me a wrapped box. “Open it.”

“How about champagne first?” Luke said.

“What a nice surprise this is,” I said, settling my purse and wrap on the back of my chair. I put the box next to my place setting. “Tell me, Mags, how did you get here before us? I thought you were planning to bring Bones back to Sea Breeze to stay with Rose?”

She waved off my question. “Bones and Radar got along perfectly, so I left them together. They’ll be fine. And listen to this. AJ straightened everything out with Bones, much to Luna’s disappointment, I imagine. Can you believe what a crock of bird poop she gave us when we were there today? I’m happy he’s with you, blah, blah, and more blah. Then she turns around and goes to the police. What a fraud.”

“You went to Luna’s today?” AJ asked in his deep detective tone. “You didn’t tell me that, Maggie. Did you threaten her with a shootout or something equally intimidating?”

Maggie laughed a loud outburst from deep in her belly. It was obvious she was feeling no pain at the moment. “I wish I had, but no. She was super friendly. Letting us cuddle with the puppies and told us all about Gary and Thorne’s supposedly devious plan to cheat her out of her business.”

I held my hands up. “How about we don’t discuss this tonight, Mags? Today has been drama on top of spectacle. I’d like to just enjoy the evening with all of you.”

Luke covered my hand with his. “Dani’s right. And here comes Lily with our champagne.
