CHAPTER 6

Branch Stores

1950–1960

I CAME TO WORK CHRISTMAS AND STAYED TWENTY-FIVE YEARS

Gimbels was a good place to work. It was good because of the people, who worked together and often became lifelong friends. The camaraderie among the employees was amazing. The culture of people’s associations with each other was something that human resource managers dream about. It was built over a long period of time, and it is unclear how it could be recreated. This was a dream job to many associates. The associates had a good understanding of what their responsibilities were and were very good at what they did. People stayed, and employee turnover among the full-time workers was very low.

Part-time regulars who worked a minimum of twenty hours a week received regular benefits, including health insurance, discounts on merchandise and vacations. Employees received good healthcare from three visiting nurses, and a physician kept regular office hours at the store. Regular employees received two weeks of vacation after working a full year, three weeks after working seven years and four weeks after working twenty years.

The employee magazine, the Gimbelite, published ten months out of the year, ran articles about the men and women serving in the Korean War, the bowling team scores of the men’s and women’s teams and news about the thirty-eight-member Gimbel chorus. Prize-winning apple pies baked by Caroline Siegel and oil paintings by Hazel Gehrke were topics of interest in the employee magazine.
