Chapter Nine

Dylan

As we come back from our trip, we find Elly in the kitchen, munching away on a bunch of chocolate cookies, looking very happy with her loot, but nobody else seems to be downstairs and I also don’t hear any more work being done out back.

Then my eye falls on a laptop on the corner of the table, Mia’s laptop. A quick glance at the screen makes my chest feel too tight, fury spiking in me and I want to punch this dude out cold. What the fuck? What the actual fuck? Who has the guts to say these things to someone they supposedly love? Who the hell has the nerve to say this to Mia?

“You stay here.” I nod at Mal, my whole body one ball of angry energy. “Keep an eye on Elly.” Then I go up the stairs, since it’s obvious that nobody is down here.

As I open the door to the room we’ve been sleeping in, I find the others in bed, but it’s not a happy sight. Tom and Jake look troubled, really troubled, and Mia is crying between them. Sobbing uncontrollably as she grips both of them tightly.

Fucking hell. I let her out of my sight for one moment and some asshole manages to get to her. Some asshole manages to break her when she’s been holding on by a thread all week.

I kneel down at Jake’s side, sliding my fingers over Mia’s cheek. “Hey, girl. We’re back. We’ve got food for the rest of the week with us.” I keep my voice low, soothing.

Just the couple of messages I saw were enough to know that the way she’s been reacting to us, the sometimes overly helpful way she was acting, was not a good thing. I know that Mal already spotted it before, but to see it, to see the actual words that he said to her, how he manipulated her... Fucking hell. The guy deserves a beating for hurting her, a beating so severe that he’ll never even consider doing something like this to anyone else.

She slowly nods. “Thank you. I’ll be fine in a moment. Don’t worry.” She’s trying to smile, and it only makes me angrier. Has she been living this lie for so long that she thinks it’s okay? Does she even know how pained she looks? “I’m just feeling a little down. There’s tea in the kitchen, you can help yourself to it. I’ll be downstairs in a moment.”

“Mia?” I reach out to her, trying to pull her out of whatever is going on, but the warning look Jake gives me makes me back off.

Tom moves, standing up, and he nods to the door. “I think it’s a good idea if we unpack the bags with food and not let the tea get cold.”

Fuck that fucking tea. I want to know what’s going on, but the look Tom’s giving me makes me step out into the hallway anyway, and he closes the door behind him. Then he puts his finger to his lips and starts going down the stairs.
