Alvaro was the third of the eight children of Clementina Diez de Solano, the daughter of Mexican landowners, and Ramón del Portillo a Spanish lawyer. Even late in life he still recited frequently prayers he learned from his mother.

Alvaro spent a year and a half as a refugee in the Legation of Honduras during the Spanish Civil War. This photo may have been taken to use on a passport as part of one of his efforts to find a way to leave the legation and escape from the area of Spain where the church was persecuted.
