AXE IN HAND, BENIAMIN got to his feet. Their sibilant hisses still resonated in his ears. Traitor, they called him, though the tongue was foreign. Somehow, he knew their language and that those things were his brothers! We shall feast on your blood after we take her from you. Then we feast on her blood.

Chest heaving, he raised his axe and let out a war cry. “You will have to kill me first!”

With pleasure.

He turned to Tor with a wild look in his eyes. “Either you kill them, or I will.”

Tor’s grin lacked humor, even as it showed his determination. “Come at me, jorogumos!”

The spiders lunged, dodging the protectors’ axes, moving so fast they blurred into one.

The protectors were fast, too, but not fast enough; venom streaked their legs. Beniamin worried the demons would wear the protectors down. Then what would happen to them? How could he protect Tori when he was only a gamma? They weren’t made to fight.

He looked over at his mate. She had a wild look in her eyes while she waved her axe. Her sister sat in the dirt beside her, dazed, still not recovered from using the strong magic.

He heard a truck in the distance, racing down the road. As it sped toward them, he saw the woman standing in the bed, leaning over the cab, her hands glowing brightly. The magic bounced off the hood of the truck and soared straight at the demons. One of the large black spiders saw the ball of flame heading for them and pushed the smaller brown one in its path. It lit up like a comet, its screams so sharp, Beniamin fell to his knees and covered his ears. The small spider disintegrated and a ball of ash rained down on their heads. The spider who’d pushed him scurried into the forest, followed by the other spider and a black wave moving like a pool of ink. Beniamin hadn’t even noticed the fist-sized spiders had returned.

He froze when a single spider darted from under a rock and raced up Agent Johnson’s pantleg. The human didn’t notice. Beniamin smacked Johnson’s leg with the blunt end of his axe.

“Hey!” he cried, lifting his leg.

“A spider crawled up your pants!” he blurted.

Johnson’s eyes widened. “What?” Before the human could stop them, Tor and Klaus were ripping off his pants, exposing his bony legs and boxer shorts. The human kicked and swore as the protectors examined him.

Tor scowled down at Beniamin while clutching both the human’s frail legs in one massive paw. “I see nothing.”

“It was there,” Beniamin insisted. “I saw it.”

After apologizing to the old human, Tor set him on his feet. The agent climbed the porch steps without a backward glance and went into the house, slamming the door behind him.

Eilea and the others emerged from the truck. Boris held Eilea’s hand while they ran up the driveway. “My babies!” she cried.

“Inside with the others,” Tor said, wiping his brow.

They brushed past them and hurried inside.

Beniamin wanted to
