ROMAN

I call Lena, but she doesn't answer, so I text.

Me: Lena, please tell me where you've gone. Or send me a map pin.

My pulse is erratic as I call around to every warehouse I know, which is pretty much every place in Kingsville.

I knew from the second I saw Scott that something was off about him. It was both the way he looked at Lena, and the way he looked at the two of us together. Something sinister in his gaze. Plus, he was so twitchy, racing away before I could take a good look into his eyes.

I had intended to speak to Lena about him, but didn't want to disrupt her work day. I could be nuts, but every instinct said right away that Scott was a weasel. Now I know in my gut that he's her stalker.

Maybe he thought if he put Lena on edge, she would turn to him for comfort? Or maybe he thought that she would confess to him that she had a stalker, and he could swoop in and take care of the problem for her? That way she would be indebted to him.

Typical scenario. A man creates a problem for a woman, solves the problem, then convinces her that she owes him dinner. Then, since he's probably loaded, he can give her the moon, and she'll be so dazzled that she'll consider a relationship.

Such bullshit. All of it.

Lena doesn't respond to my text. Dammit. I need to know where she is. Then suddenly a light bulb goes on in my head. I know which warehouse he's taking her to.

It's the farthest away.

Driving like a maniac, I pound the steering wheel in frustration. After calling for the third time, Gary, the manager of McGarry's Imports, the little-used warehouse down on Lakeshore Boulevard, answers his phone. "Hello?"

"Gary. Roman. Tell me that you're at the warehouse right now."

"No. Why?"

"Who's there? I need a contact immediately."

"I'm sorry, Roman, I don't think anyone's there. We normally don't have any shipments on Wednesdays."

"Are there security cameras?"

He snorts. "Only one at the main entrance, and a couple of fake ones at the back. You know how cheap the owners are."

No kidding. That warehouse is crumbling. I wouldn't want Lena there even if she was with me, for fear that she might step through a rotten floorboard. There's no decent reason for her boss to take her there.

Only an indecent one.

My foot stomps on the gas. "Thanks, Gary."

I call Lena again, but she doesn't answer. I'm still ten minutes away. Assuming Scott drove normally, that would mean they're just arriving now.

That bastard is going to have at least ten minutes alone in a remote location with my girl.
