Gideon’s hideaway was in Scotland.

I mean, it was more than just in Scotland. It was Scotland. It took us hours to get there, and the whole time I fought a nausea that I knew didn’t just come from the Land Rover barreling over the meandering roads. I fought hard to keep the contents of my stomach exactly where they were and fought even harder to forget why I was feeling nauseous in the first place. When Gideon wasn’t looking, I shot him glances from under my lashes.

Damn. If his offspring resembled him, they would be gorgeous. Our baby will be gorgeous.

A pretty baby.

How the hell was I going to have a baby? I gently touched the curve of my stomach. It was terrifying, but also…exciting. If I could get out of this whole elf mess alive, I would have my very own baby. It would be one of my dreams, made flesh. My flesh. I shot a look at Gideon.

And his.

At least I wouldn’t be alone. That night I told Jenna about the test. We hugged, laughed, and cried, a crazy onset of whirlwind emotions. I obviously had to confess what happened with Gideon before everything went way, way down south. Jenna swore she could have his head over everything. I went to bed not long after, letting the news settle before really digging into what the hell I was going to do.

Jenna was in the loop, so to speak, and I’m sure when she woke, she would tell Stefan all about it. Probably yell at him for letting Gideon take me. But Stefan and his clan members would come get me, he promised he would come get me. I’d go back with them and, Jenna and I could raise our babies together, like we always wanted. Her parents (and my mom, I guess) could come visit or live nearby.

It was the life I had always wanted. It just felt… somehow incomplete. But that was probably because of the whole situation. It’s not like I had expected or asked for or wanted any of this, and so it was natural that I would be a little off about the whole thing. I guess it would be nice to have a supportive partner but with Gideon….

“We’re here,” Gideon’s quiet declaration cut through my thoughts.

I almost jumped from the break of the silence and pulled myself back down to earth. I looked out the window and hid a gasp. It was beautiful!

Gideon had an island. I guess it was a peninsula since the road wound out over it up to the house. I looked back at the shoreline, then blinked as it suddenly blurred. I rubbed my eyes, thinking that perhaps I was a little more out of it than I thought.

“It’s protected by magic,” Gideon’s voice at my ear sent a thrill down my spine, but I folded my arms and moved away from him.

“Protected how?”

“Obscured, mostly. It used to be much stronger than it is now. Once upon a time, you’d have to speak a word to lift the mist.
