Chapter 4
Alanna blew on her fingers again, before tucking them back into her mittens. She'd shut her ignition off only a few minutes ago to conserve gas, but it hadn't taken long for the cold to seep into the car's interior.
She stared at the time on her phone. She should wait at least ten minutes before starting the car again. But what did she know? She was winging this.
Quiet isolation settled over her.
She hadn't let herself sit in solitude since Kevin's death. She was too scared of what she might feel. It was better to stay numb with work and the craft.
But now, in the eerie howl of the blizzard, it was impossible to steer her thoughts away from Kevin and Jenny. Had they stared through their shattered windshield into the storm and wondered if anyone would find them? What had they thought as the cold sank through their clothing and stabbed into their bodies?
Alanna shuddered and hugged her arms over her chest.
Then she heard a noise. A flash of light glowed across her windshield, which was iced over with condensation. She swallowed. Was Jacob here?
She turned on her lights so he would see her.
Then she pushed at the door and plunged into the cold again.
An unfamiliar truck was stopped on the other side of the divided highway. So, not Jacob. She frowned and looked toward town, but nothing appeared.
The driver's side door of the vehicle opened.
"Hey," a man shouted. "Do you need help?"
Did she? She took a deep breath and a white plume of air hung in front of her face. She couldn't leave the car, not when Jacob was coming for her. But here was someone who might be able to take her back to town.
"I'm stuck in a drift," she said.
The man trudged through the snow toward her. As he approached, there was something familiar about him. The closer he got, the better she could see him. He was the spitting image of the Kelly brothers. But she hadn't met any other Kellys before, never even heard there were more around.
"I'm Alanna Martin," she said.
"Chad Kelly," he said. "We are driving to Little Lothian. We started out earlier today, and the roads have been getting worse the farther we drive." He glanced at his truck.
Someone in a pink hat emerged from the passenger's side. The man's eyes narrowed as the woman approached.
"I thought you were going to stay in the truck. It's warmer there," he said.
Alanna smiled. Ah. This must be his mate. You didn't live in a town known for its werewolves without picking up on a few of their behaviors, like obsessive protectiveness.
"Gee, I hadn't noticed. Is it colder out here?" The woman laughed, then she turned to Alanna and lifted a small emergency kit. "Is everything okay?"
"Thank you. I'm not hurt."
"Good. I'm Sam, by the way. Why don't you hop in with us? We're going to town. The back seat of our cab is full, but we'll make it work."
Alanna glanced up the road again.
