I fought to contain the magic, a towel wrapped around me, my hair dripping wet, magic dancing around us like glowbugs in the dead of summer, so thick you could barely see through them.
âThis isâ¦unexpected.â Zor noted drily as he batted specks of light away. âDo you have a plan for this?â
âYou already know I do not.â I told him tartly, toweling my hair dry. âIf I still had the collar, the iron would control my power, but right nowâ¦â I shrugged. âRight now, the magic wants to run rampant I have no idea how to contain this.â
I had been trying, but the magic slipped through my fingers like water. Zor was right, I had no plan and if he discovered what Iâd done, the Shadow King would tear me apart to take this magic.
âIâll find you iron.â Zorander scanned the room. âBut binding the magic will only be a temporary fix. Youâd still have to learn to control the magic yourself, because this will only grow stronger. You should have listened to Torin, she gave you that warning for a reason.â
âDoes everyone else know? About Torinâs note?â
Why not give it to Tavion, then? Why bother giving me that kind of hope, like I was somehow special, instead of another pawn in this game?
âWe all knew you werenât supposed to try and touch the power. I suppose Torin wanted to make sure you got the message.â Zor leaned against the wall; arms crossed over his chest. âYouâve been here, whatâ¦a day? And none of us knew you were aâ¦virgin.â
I snorted. âYou thought I didnât stand a chance at claiming the magic, did you?â Typical. They figured I had nothing of value to trade for power, so I was a safe enough bet.
I suppose the joke was on them.
Two spots of color bloomed in his face. âDid you tell Razielâ¦before youâ¦?â His brow wrinkled when I shook my head, too humiliated to answer. I should have told Raziel everything, allowed him to make a choice. Iâd wronged Raz badly. Wronged him in my rush to save myself, and I had to make this right, somehow.
âI suppose thatâs good.â Zor nodded in approval. âIt means you can keep a secret.â
I rolled my eyes. There was nothing good about this situation.
âIâve seen your magic.â I said bluntly. âYou can teach me how to control this, or how to hide it, right?â
âPerhaps. Though I have an invasion to plan.â Zorâs mouth tipped up into that cold, cynical smile. âI doubt Iâll be able to make the time. You might have to find someone else to babysit you, princess.â From the look on his face, I knew exactly who he had in mind.
âRaz will never speak to me again.â
I scowled. âYou know, since Solok kidnapped me, only one person has helped me. My mother.â Zorâs eyebrows disappeared into his hair. âShe told me to claim the magic, which is why I ignored Torinâs warnings.â I looked him up and down.
âThe rest of you were determined to keep me weak.
