Chapter 12: From Doc to Danvir
Bibi had tears in her eyes when she saw me. The fuss she made over me had me cry my heart out in the privacy of the bathroom. The only adult who had ever cared about me had been Tarvinder Aunty, Rammi's mum, and now Bibi - how wonderful it would have been if I had known more of this growing up. Perhaps I wouldn't have become such a needy, emotional mess in that case.
Nobody said anything about my red eyes and pink nose after I emerged scrubbed clean of the night I'd spent in horrifying circumstances. There was hot tea and a scrumptious breakfast laid out in the kitchen. The doc, having eaten earlier while I bathed, walked in dangling the straps of my once-lost cream-colored stilettos on a finger.
'Where'd you find them?' I squawked.
'They were clear across the village from where you were. By the edge of a filthy pond.' He didn't look amused. 'We wasted hours looking for you in the wrong area.'
He spat the last few words out and his face darkened but I could only shake my head and marvel at Gurmeet's outrageous plan. She had thought far ahead, even to the point of planting a red herring. She'd meant business, that girl.
I didn't want to dwell on it. 'What made you decide to search in the woods?' I asked, and popped the last of the gobi-parontha into my mouth.
The doc set my footwear down, washed his hands, and joined me at the table.
Bibi placed a tumbler of tea in front of him and refilled mine. 'It was that foolish cousin of Gurmeet's, Amanjot, who spilled the beans,' Bibi said.
'Amanjot?' I frowned. I'd not heard the name before.
'Amanjot is from Amritsar,' the doc explained. 'She went back with her family after the festivities and forgot all about everything until she overheard her father talking to somebody over the phone early today. That's the first she learned about your strange disappearance.'
'Was she the girl who...?'
'Yes. She confessed to her father about leading you into the woods at her sister's behest. It seems she had no idea of the full extent of Gurmeet's plan. She thought it was a practical joke.'
Bibi snorted. 'I don't believe anyone in that family. Not anymore.' Clanging a pot into the kitchen sink, she made her displeasure known.
'Well, to be fair, she did seem uncomfortable about it,' I admitted. 'As though she didn't like what she was doing.'
'Well, she shouldn't have done it in the first place.'
The doc, ever the pacifist, broke in with, 'Quite right, but the girl did eventually point us in the right direction.'
'Gurmeet should be in jail,' Bibi snapped and the doc pursed his lips and threw me a questioning look.
'I wanted to talk to you about that, Latika. Gurmeet and her father, the Sarpanch, left last night to finalize her wedding to the unfortunate young man. The Sarpanch didn't at the time know of what his daughter had done. The village elders
