After setting off from the hotel, we took the train to Miss Hoshizakiâs place.
Iâd been to her school before, and as Iâd guessed from seeing her walk home, she lived relatively close byâprobably about twenty or thirty minutes on foot.
Eventually, we arrived at a nine-story condominium. The building itself was very solid, made of reinforced concrete. Each floor had two or three rooms, making it a small-scale apartment with under fifty units. I guessed it had been built within the last ten years. It was well-kept from top to bottom, and both the outside and inside were neat and tidy. Near the front entrance, I saw package delivery boxes and auto-locking storage. I guessed these were rental condos.
âYou live in a pretty nice place,â I said. âAnd the location⦠Isnât it expensive?â
âWe could have gone with a cheaper apartment, but we didnât. For reasons.â
âI see.â It didnât seem like she was paying more than she could afford, considering her bureau salary. In fact, it seemed like an appropriate choice for a woman.
ââ¦Youâre not gonna ask about the reasons?â she prodded.
âI donât think itâs right to pry into someoneâs private life,â I replied.
I didnât want to end up in a heavy conversation, and considering the context, it couldnât have been a happy story. A high school girl, living alone with her younger sister apart from their parents? I may have only met Miss Hoshizaki recently, but I could easily surmise that theyâd been through some kind of family issue.
âYouâre really blunt about this stuff, huh?â she commented. âJust not interested in other people, orâ¦?â
âDid it come off that way? I wouldnât say that about myself.â
Miss Hoshizaki put her key into the lock next to the shared entrance. The door slid open with a whirr, and we passed through it into the lobbyâa space about twelve square meters containing mailboxes and a resident bulletin board. In the back was an elevator. The floor was totally clear of litter.
We got into the waiting elevator. Her condo was on the sixth floor. Using the same key, she opened up her front door.
âCome on in,â she said.
âThanks.â
I entered her condo. How long had it been since I visited someone of the opposite sex? Had I ever done that? The thought made me somewhat nervous.
As for Peeps, weâd parted ways back in the hotel room. He was off to Ms. Futarishizukaâs villa in Karuizawa to do what his useless partner didnât have time for and put in an order for diesel fuel and radio equipment. He was, as ever, the most dependable Java sparrow I knew. Actually, come to think of it, Ms. Futarishizuka counts as a member of the opposite sex, doesnât she?
âBack already?â came a voice from down the hallway once we were inside.
Then I heard the pattering of energetic feet. A small girl rounded the corner and looked at us.
âHuh? Whoâs that man?â she asked.
âMutsumi?â said Miss Hoshizaki. âI thought you went out today.â
âMy friend had to do something else, so I came back a little while ago.
