Chapter Seven

Morgorth

I hadn’t opened my third eye in a long time. It was dangerous and could render me insane or blind if I looked too long at the simmering streams of magick that was Karishian’s foundation. But this wasn’t Karishian. I doubted I’d see much but the light from the sapphire or the box. I hoped, anyway.

I took a deep breath and it felt like prying open a rusty door. Shit. One more thing I needed to practice. That and shape-shifting… and dreamwalking. The last thing I wanted to do was get flabby in any aspect of magick, especially since my destiny involved claiming all the Pferun Dulleriin and fighting the formoryans. That also meant I couldn’t shirk my final examination by Ulezander. He was right about that—the bastard—I would only be free of him and finally be an independent mage when he determined that I’d passed.

Thoughts for later.

I opened my eyes and was stunned to see the gray tones all around me, despite knowing what to expect.

“Let’s go. Keep watch.”

“Way ahead of you.”

Aishe nocked an arrow. He walked beside me and slightly behind as we did our best to move forward over the rough terrain. This was a wild place, uncultivated, untamed. It was beautiful for that reason but also a damn trial to maneuver through.

“See anything?” Aishe asked.

“Nothing.”

He huffed.

I patted his shoulder. “It’s here. I know it is.”

“You sense it?”

I shook my head.

Aishe grumbled in his native tongue under his breath and kept his bow at the ready. “What are you seeing?”

“Grays. Lots of grays. And—wait.”

We stopped and I swung to my left. I squinted and barely made out the flickering blue light. I looked around first before returning to the light, making sure I wasn’t imagining anything. Nope. It was there.

I pointed. “That way.”

We proceeded to stumble and thrash and curse our way through thick foliage, slimy vines, and squishy ground. The noises of strange creatures surrounded us. Then something far above our heads shrieked as if it were dying a torturous death, and Aishe crouched and lifted his bow, flicking his narrowed eyes around. I also crouched, waiting. More torturous calls later, we realized that was a communication call between, maybe, birds? Or whatever passed as birds in such a place.

“Let’s get that fucking box and bail,” Aishe said.

“I’m in total agreement.”

We continued our slog. My normal vision was limited because of the third eye. I mostly saw shapes in shades of grays and no details to tell me if the shapes were trees or boulders or shrubbery. More than once, Aishe had to keep me from falling or running into something.

“Maybe close your third eye?”

“I’ll lose track of the box.”

He made a frustrated sound.

I sighed. “I don’t like this anymore than you do. Once I spy the box in full, I’ll shut my eye.”

The jungle grew thicker and forced Aishe to take the lead. I gripped his shoulder and let him tug me along as he navigated our path. I reassured him that the box was straight ahead and growing bigger the closer we came.
