GUY LOMBARD and Claire Caswell walked into the lodge conference room and found it empty. Stepping inside, Guy closed the door behind them. He picked up the phone and began making the appropriate calls to inquire as to whether Heidi Flynn was properly registered to carry a firearm in the state of Montana.

The room had a desktop Apple iMac computer sitting on one end of the table for lodge business use, and while Guy made calls, Claire logged on to begin her online search to find out more about Heidi’s Iowa connections.

Minutes later, Guy looked up at Claire. His expression told the story.

“Heidi Flynn is okay to carry a gun in Montana,” he said. “She’s properly licensed, and the gun is registered to her. She obtained her carry permit in Iowa, and Montana recognizes that permit. So, she’s perfectly legal.”

“Okay. Good information,” Claire said. Her attention strayed.

“Now, using the gun to threaten a coworker, that of course is not legal—even though the revolver was not loaded. But as I said earlier, without a witness, the case will go nowhere. It would simply be Heidi’s word against Rosie’s.”

Guy realized that Claire was not paying attention to what he was saying.

“I’d like to talk to Heidi’s boyfriend,” she said. “Let’s track him down.”

Claire hammered away on the keyboard, seeking an address for Sam Barlone, and in no time flat, she found it.

The investigators had walked Heidi to a room in the lodge next to the kitchen to rest after she had revived from her fainting spell. The room had a cot, blanket, and pillow, and Heidi gladly agreed to lie down and take a break until she felt better. Claire delivered a glass of water to her and said they’d be back to check on her. Now was the time.

They walked to the room and found Heidi fast asleep.

“Let’s go find Sam,” Claire said. “She’ll be fine here.”

They drove to the address only miles from the lodge and pulled up to a white trailer home. A young man, looking to be only slightly older than Heidi Flynn, was on his knees, peering into the flowerbed in front of the dwelling. He stood up when Guy and Claire exited the Land Rover Discovery, and he walked over to meet them.

The knees of the young man’s blue jeans were covered with dirt, and he held a spade in one of his gloved hands.

“Are you looking for someone?” he asked.

“Yes. We’re looking for Sam Barlone,” Claire said.

“What do you want with him?” the young man asked.

“We’re investigators assisting the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. We’re looking into the murder of Blake Helms at Mountain Lake Lodge,” Guy said. “Are you Sam?”

Sam’s face turned grim. “Why are you here? Has something happened to Heidi?”

“No, Heidi is fine,” Claire said. “I’m presuming you are Sam Barlone.”

“Yeah,” he uttered slowly.

“I hate to tell you this and don’t want you to worry,” Claire said, “but Heidi fainted not long ago when we were asking her some questions. She’s perfectly okay now, though.
