Chapter 18

New Digs

"Swell," Jenkin facepalmed, earning a disapproving look from Sebas.

"Now you understand why his headship insisted on evicting Lord Owen," the butler noted after activating a small Wall of Silence surrounding himself and his liege.

The scion reluctantly nodded. "I don't think Owen is wrong to reject another exclusivity deal with the royal house, though. The other nations will oppose the agreement, kidnap Owen, and force him to drop the deal or make side bargains for more medicines."

Sebas dipped his head. "Sire, people will see Lord Owen as their lifeline, and things will get ugly quickly. Are you sure this Platinum Style is suitable for him to reside in?" the manservant inquired.

Lidia glared at the pair because she realized they were gossiping about her lover to his face!

However, Owen grabbed her hand and squeezed softly. "It's fine. The second prince is making a power move to exert pressure on them, so the Trescotts need time to figure out how to respond. Although Lord Jenkin is the current heir, the headship could still replace him if my friend makes a serious mistake jeopardizing his noble house," Owen explained Jenkin's predicament.

"Sire, this is the best time for a nobleman to show his commitment," she protested. "Otherwise, Lord Jenkin is acting no better than a fair-weather friend," the girl huffed.

Owen squeezed her hand again. "Don't blame him for letting me go. Look at yourself as an example. You chose to follow me not just because you're lovestruck, right?" he teased, earning a playful slap on his skull.

"Sire, it's true that I'm a commoner and sought to latch onto someone with higher social status. But I've worked in the Trescott manor for roughly a year, and you are Lord Jenkin's only friend in the capital. He doesn't make friends easily due to the engagement cancellation. Other nobles treat him as an evil villain to make themselves look better. But if Lord Jenkin disassociates himself from you, then that leaves him emptyhanded," Lidia explained her worries.

"If you're so concerned about Jenkin, you could return to his employment," Owen teased again, earning a harder smack on his head. "Fine, let me intrude on their side conversation."

Owen abruptly stood up and bowed from his waist! "Lord Jenkin, I apologize for putting your Trescott house in danger. I started selling the alternate drug out of good intentions toward other sufferers, but doing so has jeopardized your relationship with the royal house. Therefore, it's right for you to abandon me now, and I won't blame you for it. I shall forever cherish your friendship and all you've done for me since I came to Midglen. But it's time for me to leave your warm nest and take my path alone."

Owen exited the private room with Lidia, leaving a bewildered nobleman and his manservant behind! They expected him to ask for Jenkin's secret help instead of severing ties directly.

Jenkin clenched his fists so hard that his nails dug into the flesh, causing him to bleed. Tears formed at the edge of his eyes as the young lord turned to stare at his confidant.
